We had the good fortune of connecting with Essie Yvonne Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Essie Yvonne, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson my business has taught me is perseverance. As an Entrepreneur you will face so many challenges and it can get overwhelming if you take them personally. I have had to learn to treat each experience as a learning opportunity. We are truly experimenting in business. If this idea doesn’t work, take a step back, evaluate, then take from this experience whatever it is that you were supposed to learn from it and move forward. If you want to succeed in any business endeavor, you have to learn to persevere and learn through the process. Success in anything will not happen overnight. Sometimes you will also leave an experience and it takes months to figure out what you learned but take it and let it make you more successful.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What makes my artistry stand out is that my makeup truly enhances the natural features of my clients. My clients tell me all the time that they use me because they know that I will not make them look like a totally different person. Rather, my makeup style is glamorous, effortless, natural glam. The result is makeovers that make you look like you but better. I am always hearing how the makeup that I do actually helps my clients to feel better about themselves and appreciate their own features even more. When I hear that I am so encouraged because that is truly my goal. I want my business to empower women to show up more confident in the world. It’s so much bigger than makeup.
Now I did not get here overnight. In the beginning I had no concept of what my makeup style of niche was. I would spend hours on Youtube and Instagram trying to mimic the cut crease looks and over the top glam only to feel discouraged; comparing myself to others. I truly did not like the outcome when I did makeup like this. However when I was able to stick with my niche and dedicate myself totally in growing in my niche, that’s when I was able to see success in my business. I want the world to know that I love using my gifts and talents to empower and encourage others. Further, If I can encourage you to do anything it would be chase your dreams. I am a wife, mom, mentor, and a business owner. You can do it!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I grew up on the Southside of Chicago but I have to say moving here to Greenville, South Carolina has been a pleasant culture shock for me. I have friends and family that come to visit and there are a few favorite spots I would take them for sure. One of my favorite restaurants is Smoke on the Water. The ribs and greens are my favorite dishes there. I also take my visitors to see the Reedy River Waterfall in the middle of downtown. It’s a beautiful site to see. If I want to be fancy I will take them to Hall’s Chophouse and enjoy the shrimp and grits. Strolling down main street and visiting the small shops while walking off a full belly is always a favorite past time as well. Depending on the seasons I also like to visit the Skytop Apple Orchard to grab some of their delicious apple donuts. If we are taking a day trip I would possibly travel to Asheville or Charlotte to get some good food as well. As you can see I like to eat! Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I will always go back to one of my very first mentors in business Marandan Renea. Marandan taught me how important it is to not only succeed in business but also to be careful not to neglect your family and your selfcare in the midst of chasing your dreams. Marandan is truly a Beautypreneur that has a passion for building up those rising in the Beauty Industry. She spoke to something inside of me that I didn’t yet see in myself. Marandan also taught me so much. My makeup and hairstyling skills advanced under Marandan’s guidance and she taught me how to set up my brand as a luxury concierge brand. I know that having her take me under her wing at the beginning of my career in the Beauty Industry positioned me for success. I will always be grateful.
