We had the good fortune of connecting with Estella Stone and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Estella, what is the most important factor behind your success?
For me success is measured differently depending on the project. While numbers/views/followers mean something, I find more of what feels like success when I know that my stream has brought joy to the individuals watching.
A huge part of my platform is discussing Queer issues and sharing experiences about being an LGBTQIA2S+ person. I have had people come out for the first time to me and my community in chat, and to know that the space that I work hard to cultivate has inspired someone to live life as their true and authentic selves, and that they feel safe and supported enough to share that part of themselves, is something I am always blown away by, and for which I am very grateful.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
During lockdown I was trying to figure out a creative outlet that I could do from home, but still have an impact. In my free time I started watching other streamers and was inspired by the direct live interaction and how powerful the communication directly to the viewer was. This gave me the boost and the interest in starting my own stream, and is how I made the jump to focusing on Content Creation.
I have learned that not everyone is going to like you, and you are not going to like everyone, and that’s okay. Putting yourself in front of an audience of any size is automatically putting yourself up for judgment. I notice that the people who like my streams, like my energy, or in general like me, will keep coming back. They are the reason I do this. I have learned to never expect someone to automatically like me, and if they decide they don’t, of course sometimes it stings, but it doesn’t mean there is something wrong with me, it just means we were not meant to mesh. This lesson has been a hard one to learn, but it helps me so much as I move through the Content Creator space and just in general life.
Since my life has been very unconventional it’s hard to pinpoint one thing. The traditional “trajectory” of going to college, meeting someone, getting married, having kids, etc. path has really never been my plan. Some people have said it would be easier and that I should “stick to what is known to work” but, I prefer to go on the adventure and see where it takes me.
The best advice given to me has been “find yourself, find your passion, and figure out how to use both of those to create more good in the world.”
In the Content Creation space, every move/change/update is a risk. Anything from changing the colors of your brand, to shifting the niche of your streams can be a make it or break it choice. Some of the biggest opportunities I have been able to participate in, have been a gamble that paid off. I of course assess the situation, but mostly how much it would mean to me, and if the after story would be good. Is it worth the additional work for said project? Would it be something fun to be a part of? Does it give me a platform to share and represent Queer voices? etc.
One of the best examples of risk taking in my career is coming up, and is one of the things I am most proud to be a part of. I will be speaking on a panel at this year’s TwitchCon San Diego in September. I wrote out my application, answered all the questions, but still wasn’t sure if I was going to be the right fit, but in the end they chose me to join them in the discussion.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
LA is such a mixture of cultures and worlds, that I would want to show that off! I would start of course with some of the classic LA/Hollywood things, like looking at the Stars on the Walk of Fame and of course the Chinese Theater, then stopping for lunch at In-N-Out! For a mid-day hang, I would love to share some of the amazing cozy coffee spots, like “The Butcher, The Baker, The Cappuccino Maker” or the “Beachwood Cafe”. My friends and I love Figures and Character Decor, so a stop at Funko Hollywood would be at the top of the list as well! Depending on time of year, I would say a trip to the beach would have to be a priority, I love to drive up the coast to Zuma Beach. Usually less crowded, and the walk back to the car is much shorter than other beaches. Last but not least, if we were feeling adventurous, I would take them to my favorite tattoo shop in all of LA “Supersweet Tattoos & Coffee” in Echo Park, the kindest people who are incredibly talented, and specialize in many styles. (I have gotten 6 of my Tattoos from them already!).
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My biggest inspiration is my mother. She raised me as a single parent, working in a performance career that took her all over the world, which in turn meant I got to go with her. I am forever grateful to have had the opportunity to travel and grow up learning the importance of diversity, culture, and travel.
I am also heavily inspired by my friends in the Content Creator/Streaming space. I have made some of the kindest, smartest, and most genuine friends from streaming. My close circle is a group of such diverse humans, and we go through similar things online together but are all coming at it from different backgrounds, different parts of the world, and different kinds of content. But, when we are all together our creative minds meld, and we end up collaborating on incredible things.
