Meet Esti Beauchemin | Biomedical Engineering Student & Computer Technician

We had the good fortune of connecting with Esti Beauchemin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Esti, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Art has always been a part of my life but my main goal and focus is my education. I’m about 2 years away from my bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, meanwhile I manage a computer repair shop on the side. Since releasing my art into the world in 2019, it’s been fun for me to draw inspiration from my work and school life. I’ve been experimenting with adding electrical wires to my work and I plan to add more technology based aspects in the future. As for school, I am learning in depth about the human body and mixing man and machine. This has inspired one of my latest pieces, Three of Swords, which features an anatomically accurate human heart. The more involved I get into this field of study, the more this will reflect in my art. I think by using art as an outlet for my daily tasks it sustains the balance.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
While my main inspiration comes from music, I consider myself to be a modern day renaissance woman. As an engineering student, computer repair technician, and musician, I want to work to blend art and technology. Something that sets me apart from others is that I am multi-dimensional in my media preferences. I dabble with Photoshop, acrylics, resin, sculpture, and pretty much anything I can get my hands on. I’m not afraid to make disturbing art. So I can basically translate my art style into different mediums. My art will only continue to transform as I learn more about Biomedical Engineering and implement these aspects into my pieces.
Professionally, I started off selling my art at art walks and slowly built up a fan base over these last 6 years. Initially it was difficult to vend because I did not have the equipment and it was very much a slow build up. Now I have my art pieces showing at a couple different galleries. Patience is key and one thing I refused to do was generic pop culture imagery, and any public figures in my art are purely for satire purposes or done as an homage. I am thankful for trusting all of my friends who pushed my art out there and now I have found my own circle of inspiring artists.
If anyone takes anything away from my story, it’s that your art is important and if it’s genuine, people will respond to it. As humans, we all just want to connect and meet each other’s understandings. If you believe in something enough, you will find your tribe. If you can make that tribe laugh, then that’s even better! Radium Hearts would be nothing without the authenticity it carries.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being born in Los Angeles, I have such a deep appreciation for this city. If I was showing a friend around town, the first thing we would do is pick up some grub! I can’t even admit that I have a favorite food spot in LA because there are so many delicious options. After grabbing a bite to eat, I would probably take them to some museums like The Getty and Natural History Museum. There is always a gallery in town or pop up going on that we could hit in between it all. For drinks, I would pop by my favorite spots such as The Anarchy, Boardners, The Slipper Clutch, or even catch some live Jazz at The Falls. Finally, the perfect ending would be a trip to Griffith’s Observatory for some star gazing and night city views.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My success revolves around the support of my friends and family who supported my dreams since the beginning. My two best friends and soul sisters, Ashley and Saina, are my biggest supporters and I’m thankful for them everyday. A majority of my inspiration comes from travelling as well and experiencing new things, something that my travel partner, Danny has helped with. I’ve been lucky to be centered in a wonderful community of artists that I’m grateful to call my friends, such as Sam (thenvmber13), Sarina (e.y.e_Spi), Alex (_blackcatart_), and so many others. In addition to them, my grandpa, Ron Beauchemin, a prolific artist himself, has always given me ideas and shown me tools to elevate my art. I’m thankful for my close family members, Rowan, Ryan, Jess, Marcia, and Lori who have all shared my art. Finally, without Michael Sedano (Area90art), I would have never put my art out there in the first place. So I am forever thankful for his generosity and artistic entrepreneurship. Without the support and inspiration from all of these individuals, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
