We had the good fortune of connecting with Evan Ponter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Evan, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I’ve always been drawn to creating art. I spent a lot of my youth filming my friends skateboarding or doing Jackass stunts on my Hi8 camcorder. Then I became the bassist and screamer in a hardcore band called Kill For Less. As I meandered around trying to think of my path to becoming a famous rockstar, I realized my passion wasn’t exactly music or skateboarding. It was creating art. So I spent my 20s learning how to write, design, shoot, produce and direct all forms of creative content.
What should our readers know about your business?
My business is called Spacetown Studio. I have been working to build a creative practice that focuses on art, cultural conversation and entertainment. I worked at Netflix for almost for 4 years and I would day dream about going on my own and making my own studio. I had a great time in the corporate world, but working for a major studio is all just meetings and politics. I wanted to get back to making art. I think Hollywood lost its edge. And I’m using Spacetown Studio to take it back. During this process, I learned that the best way to make impact is to have a brand and stick to it. I probably lose out on a lot of jobs because I’m too rough around the edges. But it’s a self-selecting process. I get the gigs that better align with my style because I try to live extremely authentically. If that means I turn off folks who want their creative directors wearing button-downs and oxfords, so be it!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a friend visiting the city I would start by picking them up from LAX. Yes! I am that kind of guy. Then I would drive us up to Malibu to take in the sea and the surf. After I would take us to Cafe 27 for lunch and views of the Topanga mountains. At night, I would take them to DTLA where I have my studio and we’d spend the night listening to punk rock at The Slipper Clutch on 4th and Broadway.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shout out my friend and creative partner Maria Nova who is the CEO of the agency Unholy. She’s always pushing me and inspiring me!
