We had the good fortune of connecting with Fernando Lopez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Fernando, what role has risk played in your life or career?
If you take on huge business risk, it is wise to have a track record of taking risks, specifically in business. VETERANS who go into business for themselves typically have a high tolerance for risk and followed with a track record of experiential pain. Risk taking is a necessity in business. If you are a business owner who does not take risks in growing your business then your business will inevitably fail to grow. WHY? Because change is inevitable and business owners must take risks in order to sustain the challenges that come with change.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
After 5 years of military service, I spent ten weeks backpacking through Europe and wrote up my business plan. I came home to Los Angeles and used my 3 months of unemployment (approx. $5,000) to build Zen’s Tea House; an international tea company that specializes in the manufacturing of organic alternatives to pharmaceutical drugs. Building businesses are fun and I find the most satisfaction in the autonomy developed in job creation; I love building wealth that leads to jobs that are inevitably filled by people who are more skilled than me. Our mission of helping people through the power of tea is the culture that ensures positive customer service and overall job satisfaction.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would hang out at my house drinking tea, go on a walk around the neighborhood, and maybe play a board game.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My hope is you will be able to identify your war, your business, your victories, and losses. Truly everyone experiences each of them I dedicate this book to my wife Alexis who loved me before any business or war and stood by me in every loss and victory.
