We had the good fortune of connecting with Flash Calligraphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Flash, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was casually walking around Santa Monica when I came across someone writing people’s names in Japanese calligraphy. At the time, I was also learning calligraphy, and seeing that inspired me—I wanted to make people happy with something I was good at. So I asked him if he would teach me how he sold his work.

For about a month, I sat beside him and learned from the English phrases he used with customers. I started on the streets, but over time, things grew. Now, I receive orders from all over the world through online platforms and get to participate in major Japanese cultural events.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I originally worked as a concert promoter in Tokyo and came to Los Angeles to study music business.
However, as I took classes, I found no joy in it and began to feel lost about what I truly wanted to do.
I was devastated—this was the result of spending all my savings after turning 30.

In the midst of that struggle, I discovered Dr. John Demartini and began studying human behavior, which led me to start facing myself more deeply.

After continuous self-reflection, I came to the conclusion that I should take a chance on something I had been doing all along: Japanese calligraphy.
Of course, making a living through art alone is not easy.
So I visited countless shops and booths, studied how to sell, and did everything I could by myself.
As a result, I now receive orders from all around the world.

My next step is education.
In this chaotic age of information overload, I believe it is more important than ever to face ourselves and return to our true essence.

Through calligraphy, I hope to share the journey of self-reflection and the insights I have gained along the way.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m taking you to the Santa Monica Pier-
the very place where the artist Flash was born. haha

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My respected mentor is Dr. John Demartini.

He is a scholar with multiple doctoral degrees, and among them, he possesses particularly deep knowledge and insight in the field of behavioral psychology.

His teachings and philosophy have had a profound impact on my worldview and values.

As I prepare to open my own calligraphy school, I plan to incorporate his teachings extensively into the curriculum
