Meet Francesca Nobili | Art Director & Stop Motion Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Francesca Nobili and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Francesca, what role has risk played in your life or career?
12 years ago I became a freelancer to be able to work the way I wanted, and 6 years ago I moved to LA all by myself to be able to live the life I wanted. I am all about taking risks (worthy and well planned) in order to avoid only one risk – the risk to stop loving what I do and who I am.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an Art Director, Stop Motion Artist and One-Woman-Film-Crew. Doing and making everything by myself brought me to develop my own shooting and animation technique. Moreover, I don’t use any specific software nor “trick”, such as green screen, overlay, or CGI. What you see is what you get and that’s why I like to define my style as “Hardcore Stop Motion Animation”. Another peculiarity is that I use waste materials and daily use items to fabricate sets and puppets – turning something into something else, and always embracing the blemish. When the film is wrapped, I turn the set into a diorama and decompress for a while working on single miniatures and fanzines.
I just recently had a lot of fun making a music video for the horror punk band Cancerslug, while my latest short film “Bedtime Stories” is hitting a few red carpets in the USA and abroad.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
– First day in Downtown – Union Station, El Pueblo, Broadway, Art District, Little Tokyo and the City Hall that lets you go on top of the building and have a 360 breathtaking view of LA And then:
– Sunset Strip – Whisky a Go Go, Rainbow, dinner at Mel’s
– Magnolia blvd in Burbank with all the entertainment-related shops
– Venice Beach
– Echo Park Lake
– Figueroa and York in Highland Park
– Wacko / La Luz de Jesus
– Gabba Gallery
– Subliminal Project
– Comedy Store

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Friends’ support and some collaborations were and still are very important, but in the credits at the end I am a One-Woman-Film-Crew. If I can’t dedicate my shoutout to myself, I will dedicate it to the man who triggered my new life – Tim Burton, who showed me that being an outsider is ok and you can also make art from that.
