We had the good fortune of connecting with Francesco Malandrino and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Francesco, why did you pursue a creative career?

this is a choice that comes from the heart, and at the same time you also have to be very courageous, because I knew that an artistic career it may mean not having a stable job, working mostly as freelancer especially in the film industry that is like a jungle, so somehow I can say that I was ready for this.
I have been working as DP and Camera Operator for the last 8 years between United States and Italy, I’m also a member of SOC (Society of Camera Operators) and I am always looking for new opportunities in order to grow up in my profession.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
During the last 5 years and half, I was working mostly in United Staes (between Los Angeles, CA and Miami, FL), with a peculiarity: I am part of “DP Duo” so I work with Maria Perlifonova (DP & Colorist) together we are a “DP Duo” and I met bunch of directors and producers that were very excited about that. Professionally we are pushing our career together, and when you have a trusted partner for every single project it’s great! We know each other regarding the artistic process, and the results are fantastic.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Interesting question, so I’m Italian (from Napoli) and all my best friends are from there as well, so as “Italians” we are always looking for the best food, authentic Italian food it’s not easy to find in US, but once you find a trusted place it’s fantastic, because I have the same feeling that I usually have in my county, I live in US since 2018 and now I can finally say that I know a lot of restaurants and pizza places that are great. Speaking about place to visit, I would bring my friend to all the locations where I shot during the last 5years and half, every single place where I shot it’s special for me, besides the importance of the project, I always have great feeling visiting places/locations where I worked

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Yes there are a bunch of person that must have a recognition in my story, I can start to mention my parents, my mom and my dad, without them it would have been impossible start this career, then my brother Luca that always support me and my projects, and my list can be extremely long… Let’s summarize it mentioning my film school professors as well (especially Suki Medencevic, ASC) and all my friends in Italy, they are my best supporters, in this career one of the most important thing is having people that believe in you, sometimes it makes the difference
