We had the good fortune of connecting with Fritz Wolmarans and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Fritz, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve been a tennis professional all my adult life and as i was getting older i realized that it would be very difficult for me to rely on my physical body to continue to work at the same level for years to come. My hope was to pursue something where I didn’t solely have to rely on my body or my own physical presence 100% of the time but where my natural skills and abilities could translate. An opportunity came up to get involved in the coffee industry and since i already enjoyed coffee and had an entrepreneurial spirit I jumped at the chance.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about: I would say our biggest differentiator is our roasting process. We are a small batch boutique air-roaster which is different the majority coffee’s that use traditional drum roasting. We find that it gives our coffee a unique flavor profile with less acidity and an all round smoother taste experience. We also want our business to be more than just making and serving coffee and thats why a portion of our profits go to different impoverished people groups around the world. This is something I’m passionate about in my personal life and I want our business to align in serving those in need.

How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges?
I was born and raised in South Africa and when I turned 18 I became a professional tennis player and moved to the USA. I was able to pursue my dream and played professionally for 11 years. There were tremendous highs and lows during those years but it also taught me valuable lessons in having the right perspective and attitude regardless of my circumstances. Ive tried to apply the same level of commitment, excellence and hard work to this new chapter of my life and career.

What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way:
To never give up and to always look for a solution rather than focusing on the problem. Im also learning more and more every day about the importance and value of our staff and how to connect, lead and support them better. We have such a great team and Im very thankful for that!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I really enjoy the vibe and feel of downtown Manhattan Beach. The beaches are beautiful and there is a little something for everyone. For a special dinner I would probably go to The Arthur J but there are so many great restaurants to choose from. I would also recommend trying the warm butter cake from Nick’s, its delicious. For coffee I would have to say Pure Bean although LA has many great options. For something more active I would definitely do one of the many beautiful hikes in Malibu.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My first shout out would go to my father, he was an entrepreneur himself and taught me the value of hard work, dedication and commitment to whatever you put your hands to. His support and wisdom have helped me through all the challenges that life bring. My second shout out is to my business partner and friend Barry Pulliam, he has played a major role in the success of our businesses and I wouldnt be where I am if it wasnt for his help and mentorship. Lastly and most importantly I want to thank God for every opportunity he has blessed me with. None of this would be possible if not for His provision and grace!
