We had the good fortune of connecting with G Rockwell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi G, what principle do you value most?
The preservation and development of my art will always be the top priority for me no matter what. I always think about things in relation to the growth up my artistry and individual sound as a musician. I think there’s something many artists lose when being business oriented that takes away from quality of the product. That’s of course not in anyway mean’t to devalue the importance of making a living and being able to support ones art but I hope to never lose site of the musician I aim to be by being driven too much towards money and fame. I always hope to use success as a tool to support the art that inspires me in the first place.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Everything in the music scene is all about the connections you make with people along the way. I wouldn’t say that its easy, it takes a lot of hard work to get yourself in the room in the first place, but once you’ve proved you have the artistry to fit in, the music scene will (usually) be pretty welcoming. I would have no career in music if it weren’t for all the people I met in the more casually setting who decided to help me out in one way or another. It’s this process that helped me to accomplish many of the things I’m most proud of, Touring with the Jacob Jolliff Band, Winning the Fresh Grass banjo competition as well as Recording several albums amount other things. In that way, the network that supports a musician is constantly growing and shifting. It takes a certain amount of luck but it’s also about placing yourself in the right scene for the time and daring to be the innovative and honest artist that people are willing to work with.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love the museums in Boston, were very lucky to have an incredible Contemporary Art museum as well as the Izabella Stewart Gardner Museum and Museum of Fine Arts. In Tuesday nights I like to go hang out at the Scottish Fiddle Session at the Druid, or go hear live music and one of our many incredible folk venues such as Club Passim and the Lily Pad.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My education within the Contemporary Musical Arts department at the New England Conservatory had a huge impact on my artistry and connecting me with many of the individuals and organizations that help me with booking in my career.
