Meet Gabriela Vega | Children’s Book Illustrator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabriela Vega and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gabriela, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own business as a children’s book illustrator was driven by my passion for drawing and storytelling, especially inspired by artists like Eric Carle, Mary Blair, and Quentin Blake. I wanted to create work that explores and represents my culture as a Latina artist, contributing to the diversity in children’s literature and providing underrepresented voices with a platform. Graduating from Cal State University of Fullerton with a BFA in Illustration, I realized that having my own business would allow me to grow professionally and creatively on my own terms. Winning awards from the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators and being selected for the WNDB Mentorship Program and Scholastic’s Art Mentorship Program gave me the confidence to pursue this path. The flexibility of managing my schedule and working on projects that align with my interests, combined with the freedom to work digitally while incorporating my unique style, made starting my own business a fulfilling and empowering decision. Additionally, working on children’s books has deepened my appreciation for the impact of early education and inspired me to pursue a career in bilingual education, where I can further support and engage young learners in diverse and inclusive environments.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart is my commitment to blending cultural representation with artistic expression in children’s literature. As a Latina artist, I strive to create illustrations that reflect diverse experiences and voices, aiming to enrich young readers’ understanding and appreciation of different cultures. I’m particularly proud of how my work has been recognized by prestigious programs like the WNDB Mentorship Program and Scholastic’s Art Mentorship Program, which has validated my efforts and provided invaluable opportunities for growth. Getting to where I am today professionally involved a lot of dedication and perseverance. The journey was not always easy; it required overcoming challenges such as establishing a business, balancing multiple roles, and continuously evolving my craft. I faced setbacks and moments of self-doubt, but by staying committed to my vision, seeking feedback, and adapting my strategies, I was able to navigate these obstacles. Through this process, I’ve learned the importance of resilience, adaptability, and maintaining a strong sense of purpose. I’ve also discovered the value of community and mentorship in achieving success. I want the world to know that my brand is not just about creating beautiful illustrations but also about making a meaningful impact through representation and education. My story reflects a journey of passion, cultural pride, and a commitment to using art as a tool for positive change.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For an unforgettable week in Riverside, CA, my best friend and I would start by exploring downtown with breakfast at Tio’s Tacos, a stroll through Riverside Plaza, and a visit to the Riverside Art Museum. Enjoy lunch and dinner in downtown Riverside, followed by a show at the Fox Performing Arts Center. We would then spend a day immersing in local history at the Riverside Metropolitan Museum and Heritage House, along with a nature-filled day hiking Mount Rubidoux, and have a relaxing picnic at Fairmount Park. For a taste of local culture, visit the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture at the Riverside Art Museum, and unwind at the Riverside Botanical Gardens. We would conclude the trip by exploring the vibrant Riverside Swap Meet for unique finds and local goods, and enjoying a tasty meal at The Mission Inn Restaurant.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, I want to dedicate my shoutout to my family. Their unwavering support, love, and encouragement have been the foundation of my success. My parents, in particular, have always believed in me and nurtured my passions from a young age, providing me with the resources and guidance needed to pursue my dreams.
A heartfelt shoutout to Naibe Reynoso, who gave me the incredible opportunity to illustrate her board books. Her support and trust in my work have been instrumental in my development as an illustrator, and I am grateful for the chance to contribute to her impactful projects. Special thanks to Lisa, who also gave me the opportunity to work on her book series, and whose exceptional advice and mentorship have significantly influenced my approach to teaching and writing.
Organizations like the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and We Need Diverse Books (WNDB) have provided incredible opportunities for growth and networking. The support and mentorship I received from the Scholastic Art Mentorship Program were particularly impactful. My mentor Rae Crawford offered me guidance and inspiration that have shaped my career as an illustrator.
Lastly, I want to acknowledge the students I’ve had the privilege of working with. Their curiosity, enthusiasm, and resilience remind me why I chose this path. They inspire me to keep learning, growing, and striving to be the best educator and illustrator I can be.
Thank you to everyone who has been a part of my journey. Your support and encouragement have made all the difference, and I am truly grateful.
