Meet Gabrielle Chen | Birth Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabrielle Chen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gabrielle, what do you attribute your success to?
Collective wellness is key to success. As one of my wonderful collectors restated, “Your liberation is bound with mine.”

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am currently gathering a collection of artworks to exhibit at a Collective Wellness Market hosted by Birthworkers of Color Collective in Los Angeles. We are exhibiting some old favorites as well as some exclusive new artworks. We are planning to offer small batches of prints, shirts, and stickers.
I am also hand-painting a surfboard for a collective member. I will be donating 10% of the proceeds to our Birthworkers of Color Collective to help them build a brick and mortar in Long Beach, California.
I am learning to stay centered, to commit to curiosity, and to release expectations.
I’ve been practicing chalk art, digitally illustrating, lettering, and hand-painting surfboards since 2016. Next I want to pursue tattooing.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I grew up swimming in the Pacific Ocean so I highly recommend visiting Her. We love to bring our kids – we like to draw in the sand and splash in the water. For surfing, our local break, Bolsa Chica State Beach, near the river jetty is our new go-to spot. I love the marina farmers market in Long Beach, best cookies ever from Paderia, chai latte from North End Caffe in Manhattan Beach, and delicious Filipino-Korean fusion Barrio at Steelcraft in Garden Grove + super kid friendly outdoor area.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate my shoutout to my family – the people I see at the beginning and end of each day, the ones I share meals with, the ones I see grow over a lifetime.
Only with collective support am I able to create art. I was provided a large space to freely create art by my fiancé. I am lucky to receive his abundant generosity, faithful support, and gentle love. I am beyond blessed to have the beautiful beings that are existing as my parents and I cherish our ongoing and evolving relationships. For too long I have dribbled paint on their floors and painted their walls without permission. Love you both!!! My sisters, my mirrors, who I see myself in, wishing them to live their best lives, allowing me to live my best life. And of course my precious children, I am with you in your hearts!
