We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabrielle Corse and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gabrielle, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I’ve always enjoyed making beaded bracelets since I was a kid. I am a math teacher and tutor and one day I was tutoring a visual learner. I got an idea to try to represent multiplication in a bracelet so she could wear it and see the concept played out in colors and patterns. When the pandemic hit I had the time to create new bracelets representing different math concepts and I created math lessons to go along with the bracelets as well.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a math teacher at an elementary school in North Hollywood. It certainly has not been easy. Teaching is a really challenging profession. It’s hard to have a work-life balance and it can be EXHAUSTING. The lessons I’ve learned is to keep it simple and focus on the positives. No matter what there are always going to be issues in every field- many of which are out of our control, It’s so much easier to focus on what went wrong vs. what went well. There are so many lessons I’ve taught that FLOPPED and I questioned my abilities as a teacher. When I was younger I let it discourage me, but as I get more experience I realized that failure is just a part of the process. I want the world to know that I created this brand to help kids find the JOY and creativity in math. I used to really struggle with the subject, and I think it’s because of my mindset. Math is not about being fast or perfect. Math is actually about finding patterns and being methodical and creative.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to Ecstatic Dance which is my FAVORITE activity. It’s a little bit of yoga and dancing on the beach and it’s such an uplifting activity. I’d take them to citizen public market and villagewell- two of my favorite spots in Culver. I’d also take them to Griffith park and the Culver stairs.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to send a shout out to my friend and mentor, Chris Reale. He is a graphic designer and photographer based in Culver. He created the logo for Brainy Bracelets and has been a huge supporter of me and my business.
