We had the good fortune of connecting with Garrett Kirk and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Garrett, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Money.
It cost alot of money to fill up the truck, drive to the venue, eat while you are out, get a hotel, Etc..
Even if it is a local show there are millions of musicians who are willing to play for free so they can show their friends at work how cool of a weekend they had. Or think about how many musicians truly just want to be heard. Alot of us have been working hard to make a living at this for years, so just think about how much competition there actually is in this thing.
We are constantly striving to bring a better looking stage, purchasing new outfits for each show, bigger speakers…You know, all of that flashy stuff.
This “Lavish lifestyle” cost Money!
One thing is for sure, we spend alot of money and take alot of pride in our appearance on stage. Its fun too!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from everyone else is everything.
When I was writing these songs, I was either coming off of alcohol, sitting in jail, waiting on a court bench…
Heck, there was a time when I was legitamately living in the woods and I had to eat a snake because I was hungry.. Im not kidding.
Nature has also also had a big impact on my writing style, so in some of my songs you can almost feel the wind from the trees because I do alot of writing outdoors.
So yeah, We have had alot of positive feedback lately with this…We actually just played at a really high end smokeshop the other day and it was awsome. It is almost a goal to NOT be like other artist and its helping us book shows too!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Which area?
If you plan on visiting, odds are you wont be staying anywhere long with me. To tell you the truth the Highway has been my home for many years now. We are road dogs and its almost impossible for me to be a full time musician without traveling.
I dont understand why musicians dont like traveling. Its fun, it pays well and its an excellent way to showcase the songs that all of us have worked soo hard on perfecting. Its also nice when fans anticipate having you back.
I do like the Rockies though.. and there is a food truck in Inyo County, CA. that my buddy Robert Miller owns called Kumazaa Nobi that has the best frybread.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I could not give enough credit to the ones who have helped me, and if I did there would be way too many names. So for now ill just say Waylon Jennings. I mean I did name my son after him and he is probably one of my bigger country music influences for sure. Something about a Fender Telecaster really gets me goin.
