We had the good fortune of connecting with Garrett S Broussard and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Garrett S, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I can’t stand a looming “what if”. When I back down from something that’s too risky, I spend an eternity thinking about it. Regret is like a mental tattoo that never fades. I’ve applied that to my career in animation and visual effects, and it’s served me well. I took jobs that required me to move across the country, then out of the country, and was rewarded each time. I almost stayed in New Zealand permanently.
I knew self publishing would be a risk and a deep dive into vulnerability, but I couldn’t hold on to the stories any longer. I knew I needed to focus on writing until I had a book I was ready to share with the world. Now I can enjoy the fulfillment of the risk I took, and convince myself to take more risks with future books.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Authenticity. There’s no shortage of SFF authors out there self publishing their work, but I truly believe that keeping true to my own voice keeps the stories unique.
What’s the point of sharing my stories if they’re not representative of me?
It wasn’t easy getting here, there were a lot of people questioning whether I could, or should, make it in a creative field.
People weren’t rewarded for expressing themselves back where I grew up, so it took a lot of work to stand up tall and share my heart with the world.
I want the world to know that I’ve finished the first book of many, and that I’ll keep writing long after anyone keeps reading.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d have to take them for burgers, wings and breakfast burritos. 100%. Oh, and good coffee. This town is full of awesome food just around the corner, and sometimes on the corner served from a little grill next to a “cash only” sign. Add bacon wrapped dodger dogs to the list, but at like 2am in a metro station.
I’ve got a couple of secret spots to go chill and get a view of landmarks without having to deal with the crowds. Maybe bust out a j or two and and uber to a bar after. I’d take them to the beach too, probably Santa Monica. Walk in the sand and contemplate the vastness of the ocean.
I really like taking people to Hollywood. It takes them a while to get acclimate to what the area is really like, but there’s so much cool stuff going on there. Dinner or drinks at the Roosevelt, movie at TCL theater, watch them stick their hands in the nasty concrete like I did the first time I went. Just reveling in the dream that is Hollywood and filtering out the rest of it.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife, Libby. She’s not only one of the first people to convince me to publish my book, but she supported me through the whole process. She even showed me how to format my stories to look like a book. I remember that night as the first time I thought this was possible.
Now, we’re 5 months into marriage and have already lost two family members and our entire neighborhood to one of the worst disasters to hit Los Angeles. Even through all the bullshit life throws at us, she keeps me going. What a trooper, and she’s gorgeous too.
