We had the good fortune of connecting with GAVINCI and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi GAVINCI, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
My approach to risks and risk-taking, by extension, is to ensure I’m not avoiding risks to do what’s comfortable for me. While plenty of chances might not be deemed “worth it,” many of them could be of value in the long run. I’d go as far as saying that risks are essential to growing. Without taking risks, it’s easy to fall into complacency and stop yourself from achieving what you want. Taking risks has played a massive role in my life and career, even down to my location. In the heat of the pandemic, I moved across the country from Virginia to California to be closer to the music industry. This was all done while I was still taking college courses; although the classes were online, I didn’t have to go anywhere physically; it was a huge adjustment primarily due to the time zone difference since my college was on the east coast. Even my time was heavily affected as this was my first time living alone, and dealing with California rent prices was a bit of a shock. Everything wasn’t complicated, though; In making that move, I’ve been able to network with many fire creatives and get opportunities that I wouldn’t have had I gotten comfortable and never taken the risk of moving out here. Risks are unavoidable in the music industry if you want to make it. The industry is super competitive, and with many people doing similar things trying new approaches, and making moves that might be seen as abnormal might be what sets you apart from everyone else and gets your foot in the door.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
I’m a music producer and designer; on the music side, I primarily work on r&b and hip hop, occasionally branching into jazz and electronic music, which I had grown up on. As a designer, I’ve done everything from creating clothes for brands like Complex Season and Harleem2x to creating cover art for musicians on Empire Records rosters. I started out on my creative journey as early as Elementary school when I would go to the studio with my mother, who is a singer. That continued to be a thing until I got to Middle School and learned about FL Studio, which was gaining traction, especially with the influence of legends like Lex Luger from the same area as myself. Since I was always good with computers and had an ear for things, it didn’t take long for me to learn the program. Producers like Timbaland and Pharrell served as inspiration and helped me establish my own style. I didn’t start taking things seriously until I got to Virginia State University and started producing for people on campus and recording music out of my dorm room. I realized I could do something with it when I started getting paid for something I was doing primarily as a hobby. I had a skill that translated into making a living and a legacy for myself. Things weren’t easy; there were days when I couldn’t find people to work with, or my schedule wouldn’t allow me to do as much creatively as I had hoped. The biggest thing in those times was focusing on the success that I could achieve and the future I wanted to obtain for myself. I had come a long way from where I started, so it was no need to get discouraged. I already knew I could accomplish whatever I set out to. To succeed, the only thing I had to do was not quit.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Coming from the south, the food options in LA are a little different, to say the least, but I found a few tiny gems. There are a couple places I like that are well-known, like Harold’s Chicken, and a few less-known ones, like Lucille’s Smokehouse Bar-B-Que and Lazy Dog. In terms of activities, there are many good options ranging from Six Flags Magic Mountain to Universal Studios.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
