Meet Gebar | Director / Editor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Gebar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gebar, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I founded own film production company, Ordinary Visions, in 2016 while still in college. Ordinary Visions is a creative studio that brings both small and large-scale visions to life through in-house development, pre-production, production, and post-production services. Our work spans multiple mediums, including short films, branded content, and music videos.
We specialize in crafting narratives that are rooted in authenticity, challenging traditional molds with a unique visual language. As someone who grew up in Eritrea and moved to the U.S. at age 11, I often struggled to express myself. Storytelling became my outlet—a way to share my thoughts and emotions with the world. That personal connection to creativity drove me to build a company where I could help others bring their unique stories to life. It’s been an incredible journey collaborating with talented artists in LA and beyond, and it’s a privilege to create work that connects and inspires.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As a director and editor my art is rooted in authenticity with over five years of professional experience, I have specialize in narrative films, documentaries, and music videos. My work has been recognized with the 2024 Impact Docs Award for the short documentary The HoodTrophy Bino Story: Breaking the Generational Curse and four consecutive THIZZLER Director of the Year nominations (2020–2024).
My narrative short films, Beles and Harestay, both shot in Eritrea, have been showcased at renowned festivals such as the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival, Seattle Black Film Festival, New Haven International Film Festival, Silicon Valley African Film Festival, and ARFF Amsterdam // International Awards. In addition to these projects, I’ve directed music videos for notable artists, including Blueface, Skilla Baby, Mozzy, Drakeo the Ruler, Phoenix Flexin, Heembeezy, and Rexx Life Raj.
The journey has been challenging—transitioning to a new country, navigating cultural differences, and breaking into a competitive industry demanded resilience, persistence, and strong support systems. These experiences shaped my commitment to amplifying underrepresented voices and bringing fresh perspectives to the screen. My ultimate goal is to create work that inspires, connects, and proves that passion and determination can overcome any barrier.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For a perfect day in LA, I’d start by taking my friend to the gym for a morning workout to set the tone with some energy and focus. After that, we’d stroll along Melrose Avenue, exploring its unique fashion boutiques and vintage shops. Melrose is a haven for anyone who loves style, with one-of-a-kind stores and vibrant street art. For lunch, we’d head to Little Ethiopia for a delicious, authentic meal that feels like a taste of home. This combination of fitness, culture, and creativity makes for an ideal and memorable day.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate my biggest shoutout to my mom, who is the reason I am where I am today. As a single immigrant parent, she sacrificed so much to ensure I had every opportunity to pursue my dreams. Despite the challenges we faced, her belief in me never wavered.
One of the most pivotal moments in my journey was when she used her credit card to buy my first DSLR camera—a leap of faith that marked the beginning of my filmmaking career. She saw my potential even before I did and invested in my future, not just financially but emotionally. Her unwavering support, hard work, and encouragement are the foundation of everything I’ve accomplished. I carry her spirit in every project I take on, and her love continues to inspire me to dream big and give back.
