We had the good fortune of connecting with Gene Blalock and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gene, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Ah, happiness, the perpetual pursuit that remains ever elusive, yet undeniably vital in life and art…. Happiness is a fundamental aspect of life; for me, it lies in the creative process. Whether it’s art, poetry, writing, music, or filmmaking, the ability to bring stories to life is essential. There’s an indescribable satisfaction in witnessing an idea metamorphose from a mere concept into a tangible, lived experience.

In the realm of film direction, it’s the collaborative tapestry of filmmaking that adds another layer to my happiness. Working with a talented and passionate team, from actors to crew members, is a truly enriching experience. Each project becomes a distinctive odyssey, and the collective commitment and enthusiasm of all involved contribute significantly to the overarching sense of fulfillment.

The gratification extends to the impact of films on audiences – the ability to evoke emotions, initiate meaningful conversations, and, at times, serve as a catalyst for inspiring change. This, undoubtedly, brings about a profound sense of accomplishment that transcends the boundaries of the screen.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I don’t like that term… “brand…” It just seems like something corporations and “influencers” use to try to add meaningless value to what they are selling. If any label were to be associated with my work, I would hope it would be one of kindness – not just toward our fellow humans but to all living creatures. The actual value lies in the genuine connections forged in this life rather than any attempt to artificially elevate one’s persona.

My journey has been anything but easy, but who’s is? Like any artist, I’ve faced my share of challenges. I’ve tried to remain dedicated, practice resilience, and have a willingness to learn from setbacks. I’ve tried surrounding myself with supportive and talented people, staying true to my vision, adapting to adversity, and not letting self-doubt and loathing take over.

I’m still learning that failure is a part of the creative process. Each setback is an opportunity for growth and refinement. Staying adaptable and open to new ideas has been crucial.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take my friends to The Broad Museum in Downtown LA to explore contemporary art, as well as LACMA. We can also catch a show at Zombie Joe’s. I would take them to scenic overlooks of the city at night and interesting historical and film locations, such as Heritage Square and Malibu. We could also visit Hollywood Forever Cemetery, the Museum of Death, Griffith Observatory, the Hollywood Heritage Museum, The Last Bookstore, Angels’ Flight, and Sugar Mint Gallery. If they were really feeling adventurous, the underground tunnels of LA,

For food, we could try SunCafe Organic, Shojin, or Doomie’s Home Cookin’ if we’re in the mood for some junk food.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
To all the misfits, the dreamers, and the artists who have faced the challenges of pursuing their creative passions against the backdrop of societal norms. To those who have dared to be different, chosen the path less traveled, and persevered in the face of adversity…

In the journey of creative expression, a shared struggle binds us all. n the journey of creative expression, So this is for those who have been pressured to conform to societal norms and expectations, but have instead chosen to embrace their individuality and create art that reflects their true selves

Also, to the countless artists, rebels, and visionaries who have inspired me and continue to inspire others by fearlessly pursuing their artistic visions, those who understand that true fulfillment often lies in pursuing one’s passion, even if it means going against the grain.

Remember, it’s okay to be different and to follow your path. Embrace your uniqueness and use it to create something beautiful and meaningful. You never know whose life you might touch or inspire along the way.
