We had the good fortune of connecting with David Marshall and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi David, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Fashion has always been in my family—my grandfather used to design his own suits and my mother studied as a seamstress in high school. Starting a brand became a focus for me when I realized that my ideas were on the same level of the product I saw in stores and to take it a step further, I saw things that I were doing not represented in the market.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My design framework comes from my time in prep school and the brands I was brought up under. Finding my style is a big part of the journey, though. It’s definitely been a challenging journey. I would say that endurance and perseverance are key components of my success thus far. I learned more importantly than anything you have to believe in yourself and that at the end of the day the work is the work. L’academy is about growth progression and the never ending quest for knowledge.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Beach Day in Santa Monica is the best.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would dedicate it to my mother. She’s always supported me and gave me the confidence to believe in myself.
