We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin Jacobson (aka Jayco) and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Justin, how do you think about risk?
To me, risk is a calculated formula. Basically, I weigh pros and cons and assign weight and probability to each of them. Of course I don’t want to take a risk that will potentially harm me physically or emotionally, but I often think that having a regret later on in life would be the most negative outcome of a decision.

It’s impossible to know the ripple effect of a decision in the long term, so I try to think of risk assessment as an opportunity and not something I do out of fear. Because of that thought process, I often like to trust my gut when it comes to making a decision. For example, I recently decided to put my law school career on hold to pursue songwriting full time. It may seem a little crazy but I felt that this was the decision that sets me up best for a more fulfilled life and I have tried to eliminate any worries of what other people may think of that decision.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I take a delightfully weird approach to music. I think that the maximization of laughter is a really good step towards a more fulfilled and happy life. I also feel that it is harder to find humor in things if you aren’t setting yourself up to be comfortable to laugh. This includes taking care of yourself and treating others well so that you don’t feel guilty. I have written songs for almost 10 years and have had fun the whole time. I feel fortunate to have a career that I feel so passionate about, it has always been important to me to find work that feels fun. I have learned to be patient, to trust the process and to spread love and positivity.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to thank the talented and wise producer pnkblnkt for inspiring me creatively.
