We had the good fortune of connecting with GeNella McCrary and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi GeNella, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
Whew! One thing about tech people fail to realize is: YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A NERD! Ha! So many people hear “I work in Tech” and instantly think you know how to hack an account or build a computer. There are so many roles in this industry not only for the left brainer but the right creative brainer as well. I’m a creative and I thought the same thing about the industry before I pivoted from radio to being a Scrum Master. I thought I had to learn code to be successful in the field, but it’s not true. There are plenty of non technical roles for the people who don’t want to do technical work. 🙂
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love this question because being more tech facing on my social media these days my new followers don’t know my background is in the arts. I paint, I act, I do graphic design, hair, makeup and I always wanted to retire as an art teacher (still will do this, lol). I was also in radio for 5 years prior to my pivot. I have to say it’s not easy balancing tech and art because these days you have to find a niche and stick to it to see results but I’ve learned along the way to have gratitude for all my talents and to do what my heart desires at every stage of my life. So, I do tech and I do my art and I try my best to implement my artistry and radio personality in my podcast, social media aesthics to bring it full circle. I don’t want to limit myself to one path, I wanna experience all the paths I have a passion for, and that is my brand: Tech Missfits.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
St. Louis is full of gems and most of the good stuff is FREE! I would totally take folks to the hot areas like, The Loop, Central West End, The Grove and Cherokee street for some food and shopping vibes. We must have IMOS pizza, Chinese food (iykyk) and a Vess Soda! Once we’re full and happy we’d take a stroll along the Gateway Arch grounds and hit the City Museum, one of the countries best museums (check the stats!)
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
As much as I push forward and lock into focus when I’m determined to get to the next level alone, I have to give major thanks to the free tech programs and mentors that have helped me pivot into the tech space. Launchcode and Alambda Systems not only put me on track to find a role fit for me but I forever have an opportunity to give back and teach others who are where I started 3 years ago.
