We had the good fortune of connecting with Geo Dillon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Geo, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk is a necessity to start and grow your business but risk doesn’t always feel so good. From my personal experience, taking risks in business can leave me feeling unsure and frightened but I realized that this is totally normal, it’s our thinking mind trying to keep us safe. I have learned to overcome this uncertainty in the following ways. First, do not take your life savings to Vegas and bet on number 7! Educate yourself, do as much research as possible and be honest with yourself, “is this level of risk worth the reward” Use your intuition, it is usually correct. When I started my 1st business, I did my research and purchased the latest engraving equipment and the best brand available, I listened to my educated inner voice which kept telling me that there is a business to made from this technology, I was correct. This was a $30,000 investment which I put on my credit card, not a comfortable feeling. It took me about a year to figure out production methods and fine tune the product line but I stood strong and kept my eyes on the prize. The outcome, our 1st year in business we shipped $ 1.2M of fashion jewelry from our garage. 20 years later, the same machine is still going strong. Yes, there were many twists and turns but without that initial financial risk, my business would not have been possible, no risk no reward!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
For the past 20 years, I have owned and operated a successful fashion jewelry business named Dillon Rogers. Our primary products are leather bracelets engraved with positive words and messages that inspire and uplift. My creative mind is always running and for a few years, I had the idea to branch off into luxury homeware. I felt that luxury designer candles would be the correct fit for my skillset. I wanted to take what I was creating in my fashion jewelry line and apply it this collection but how? I realized that I needed a little edge, spark, and hipness, something fresh, a collection that inspires and allowed me to look inward in order to create my perfect outward expression of creativity. I abandoned all preconceived ideas and went to work making a collection that I could proudly place into my own home. It took hundreds of samples, design iterations and much soul searching but I was able to create a line of truly unique leather wrapped candles that are totally different than anything available. You are not just buying another candle; you are embarking on a totally new candle experience!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Los Angeles is big and spread out, with so much to do for a first timer. California has a truly beautiful coastline. An afternoon trip to Malibu is not complete without a stop at Malibu seafood, funky outdoor picnic tables, great seafood a 180 degree coastal view and a gentle breeze, simple and highly enjoyable. Not everyone would agree with my next selection but it is the happiest place on earth. Yes, Disneyland. From young to old, something for everyone. I grew up in Hollywood but have never done the “tourist circuit” The kitsch value of the Hollywood Stars Home” bus tours must be off the charts and good fun. If all that excitement is way too much for you, The “Self-Realization Center” at “Lake Shrine” is always a peaceful retreat. We have so many restaurants and museums; it’s easy to stay entertained for weeks.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a thanks and a “Shout Out” to my former wife Dori Rogers. Together we started our first business “Dillon Rogers” which was wonderfully successful. We both had our strengths and weaknesses and we were able to help each other learn and grow to create a successful business.
