We had the good fortune of connecting with George Townley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi George, looking back, what do you think was the most difficult decision you’ve had to make?
I was working full-time as a graphic designer while pursuing my illustrations on the side. Although I loved the team and enjoyed my time there, I always knew the traditional 9-to-5 life wasn’t for me. I never felt truly fulfilled, especially as my Los Angeles-inspired work was beginning to gain traction in the background.

Leaving that job was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made, and I was overwhelmed with panic once it was final. But luckily I had a print release that same week, and it performed far better than I could have imagined. That success gave me the reassurance I needed to trust the leap I’d taken.

I always recommend that new artists keep a job while building their careers. I don’t think I’d be where I am today without the valuable lessons I learned from working full-time, as well as the financial stability. It allowed me to pursue my true passions without worry.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m an illustrator based in London with a deep passion for capturing the essence of Los Angeles and California. This fascination began during a study abroad program when I had the chance to live in California during university. My art blends a sense of nostalgia with contemporary flair, highlighting the way light and shadow play across iconic landmarks in the city, especially during the golden glow of sunset.

While I’m now based in London, I grew up in a small town in the north of England. This project started as a way to escape my grey, overcast surroundings. Escapism has always been important to me, and through my art, I could transport myself to the heart of Hollywood, surrounded by blue skies, palm trees, and sun-drenched streets. My goal is to create work that offers others the same sense of escape and inspiration

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love this question because showing friends around the city for the first time is one of my favourite things to do.

I always suggest starting the trip in Venice Beach. It’s close to the airport and has a walkable, laid-back vibe with plenty of great bars and restaurants. Watching an iconic LA sunset from the beach on your first night really sets the tone for the whole trip. Also, there’s a Mexican place there called “Teddy’s Red Tacos” that is tradition for my first night now.

For the second half, I’d recommend staying in West Hollywood. It’s less touristy than central Hollywood but still close to all the iconic landmarks. Some of my top picks include the Stahl House for its stunning views, the Griffith Observatory for its inspiring architecture and cityscapes, El Coyote Cafe for a slice of classic LA dining, and the Chateau Marmont for cocktails in a historic building renowned for its Hollywood history.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to the Griffith Observatory Foundation, an incredible organization that plays a vital role in preserving the Griffith Observatory and its surrounding parklands. They make sure this iconic space remains free to the public, while also supporting local educational programs. It’s especially meaningful to me, as the Griffith Observatory is what first sparked my passion for drawing Los Angeles architecture.

Fast forward to today, I’m lucky enough to have collaborated with them multiple times and maintained a wonderful relationship.
