We had the good fortune of connecting with GongYao Wang and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi GongYao, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success is perseverance and diligence. As a foreign person, working in the U.S film industry is not easy, especially you have to build your connection and personal marketing from zero. Also, you have to pay more time and energy to expand your connection and network. I’m glad I have built some really good connections and met some partners after I started my career in LA. In addition to this, diligence and hard working are also very important to me, you have to keep job hunting and to catch every chance or every opportunity, I have been in this state since I moved to LA, and will keep this going.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I moved to LA and started my career in 2019, it was really tough in the beginning. As I mentioned before, it was really difficult to build and expand your connection as a foreign person in the film industry, but through my efforts, I think I have gained a lot and got some improvements. Now I have worked for some big-name and productions, like Netflix, Jubilee Media, Facebook, and The Shade Room. Some of my works has been played over million times on Youtube and other plateform.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a Chinese, I would say LA has the best Chinese food in the U.S, I definitely will bring my friend to my favorite Chinese restaurant, It is called Alice Kitchen in Monterey Park, you can taste some real Chinese food there.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would say the film Whiplash, as a production sound mixer, I was surprised by this film’s sound work, the drum’s sound is amazing, and I know how difficult to record such a high-quality drum sound onset, also the dialogue was amazing, especially after I knew there are some scenes without lavalier mic, which is incredible. This film really inspired me, and I believe I found a sense of accomplishment and pleasure when you recorded some really high-quality production sound.
