We had the good fortune of connecting with Gregory Blair and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gregory, what are you inspired by?
At the risk of sounding glib, I can get inspiration anywhere, from anything. Not that I do on any consistent basis, mind you. But I think the world is a bounty of ideas and inspirations: people around you or in the news doing or saying something; a performance; something in nature catching your eye; it could be anything. All you have to do is be present and pay attention; a moment will occur and something about it will strike you and linger and–if you go with it–inspire you toward something creative. So be mindful of and open to those moments and inspiration will come.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think my story is a lesson in being true to yourself. As a kid, I was unprepossessing, but fearless and passionate about being my authentic, artistic self. I often questioned the rules, partly because I knew I was a bit of an outlier and partly because the rules weren’t always in my favor. When I entered the professional entertainment world, I tried for a while to play by the rules. But after struggling to succeed that way, I found that being your true self is what sets you apart and makes you stand out.

Whether I’m acting, writing, directing or working with another artist as a consultant, the thing that makes my work stand out is the special way I do what I do because I do it exactly as I am, without trying to be anything else. And that’s what people, it turns out, desire most of me and hire me for. It’s the perfect way to do business: to offer your best, true self and have the world respond favorably and ask for more.

People will try to put you and keep you in a box. I just never let them. After I made my slow-burn psychological thriller “Deadly Revisions”, I did a 180 and made “Garden Party Massacre”: a silly over-the-top comedy. My new film “The Mystery of Emma Thorn” is an emotional family drama. I’ve played sweet, lovable characters and reprehensible monsters. In short: I just don’t fit any typical box. And I never will. And I’m good with that. I’m happy being who I am and making the art I want to make.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
L.A. is so rich and diverse, it’s crazy to try to cram everything in one week. But here’s a list of ideas:

Sites: Hollywood Boulevard, Sunset Boulevard, Griffith Park/The Observatory, The Greystone Mansion & Gardens, Rodeo Drive, The Getty Museum, The Santa Monica Pier, Venice Beach, Downtown (Disney Hall, Angel’s Flight, Boneventure, Skyspace, The Last Bookstore), The Grove/Farmer’s Market, Universal Citywalk

Eats/Drinks: Scum and Villainy Cantina, El Compadre, Formosa Cafe, Hugo’s, Yamashiro, Miceli’s, The Abbey

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I always like to honor my parents because they were both unconditionally supportive of my artistic endeavors from the beginning. When they were able, they bought me tools for my various creative interests: paints, puppets, magic kits; they listened to my writings, they watched me perform shows; they encouraged, supported, and nourished my artistic desires and growth. I dedicated my first film “Deadly Revisions” to my father, because he passed before it was finished…and I know it would have made him very, very proud.
