We had the good fortune of connecting with Haley Hill and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Haley, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Honestly, I never thought I would own my own business! I had been working for a company as their in-house photographer for years and wanted more flexibility in my schedule. They were unable to give me that so I went part time and started taking small shoots on the side. It really just spiraled as I started gaining more clients on the side and working less at my job. Eventually I took the leap and never looked back! The freedom of being my own boss is the absolute best and I always try to encourage anyone thinking about starting their business to just JUMP 🙂

What should our readers know about your business?
In the architectural/interior photography space, there aren’t a ton of women – so that for one sets me apart! With every client and potential prospect, I aim to be someone who is easy to work with, reliable and consistently delivering high quality work. I was lucky to start off working with Eater San Diego photographing new restaurants. This allowed me to grow my network quickly by connecting with architects, interior designers, general contractors, etc. I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today without that under my belt! I’ve grown so much as a human, business owner and photographer from running my own business. I’ve learned how capable I am at running my own business – even the accounting and admin side of things that I never thought as a creative I was ever even “good” at. One thing I would say to anyone thinking about doing their own thing – take the leap – you’ll surprise yourself 🙂

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First things first, we going to the beach baby! I live in North Pacific Beach so obviously we’d hit up tourmaline to go surf and then eat at my fave spot Second Nature for brunch. For drinks and dinner, my other favorite spot is Fort Oak in Mission Hills. Best cocktails, food and ambiance in town! Pre-COVID, I’d end the night at Uptown Tavern in Hillcrest for Silent Disco. Nothing better than a night out in the gayborhood!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My fiancé, Colleen, has been a huge part of my success as a business owner. She is my constant source of inspiration, encouragement and support! Also, I’m super inspired by other female entrepreneurs, many of whom are close friends and others who I admire from afar.
