We had the good fortune of connecting with Hanbo Hong and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hanbo, how do you define success?
Success is doing what I love for a living, while taking care of my loved ones.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Music has always been part of my life. I learned piano when I was very young, and I was studying composition when I was in high school. Like many others around my age, I am good around computers. So soon after I got into Berklee College, I realized my talent could be not only in composition but also in audio technology. I took part in many recording sessions when I was in College, 200 plus hours per semester to be exact, and I got up the ladder really quick. Before I graduated, I was many people’s ‘go to’ engineer for recording and mixing, that including students and professors, some visiting artists even. I was glad my colleagues and friends could trust me, and it felt great to be good at what I loved. What might set me apart from others would be my energy and enthusiasm. I work hard every day just to make sure I can do what I love for a living, and I clearly understand the idea of “I am working on another person’s song.” That means when I mix or record, I try to understand the artists’ or producers’ vision of the song, and help them get there as best as I can, instead of hijacking the song from them. It is the best feeling ever to me when I see my clients are successful.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to Griffith Observatory to see the city from far, maybe Santa Monica for the beach and sea, and Malibu for sunsets. We would take in-and-out drive through for the brunch, and dinning in my house for the dinner. I would cook a four dishes dinner with mashed potatoes, asparagus, steaks and some sauteed vegetables. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family and my friends. I wouldn’t be here if my mom hasn’t raised me to the best of her abilities, and I wouldn’t be here either without my friends’ support, both physically and emotionally.
