We had the good fortune of connecting with Hanyu Gao and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hanyu, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?

As an editor, urgent tasks and occasional overtime work are inevitable. I believe the most important aspect of balancing life and work is to delineate between work time and personal time, urging myself to complete tasks within the designated time, and avoiding procrastination to keep me from extending work into personal time. When there is unavoidable overtime, it is essential to estimate the expected duration of the overtime work and allocate sufficient time for personal matters. Organizing work systematically forms the foundation for balancing work and life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a video editor, and my dream is to become a film editor. However, currently, I edit mainly the web series. I believe my strengths in my work are being able to complete tasks quickly and having a lot of patience. With my extensive work experience, I can also come up with solutions to problems as quickly as possible when they arise. Recently, several Web Series that I’ve edited have garnered impressive viewership on the platform. I understand that editing is just one part of the overall production process, but the substantial viewership still fills me with pride. Up until today, I haven’t distinctly felt that this journey has been either easy or difficult. I set small, achievable goals for myself within each period, and they are very within reach. All I need to do is focus on excelling in my primary responsibilities at the time, as proficiency and expertise in my work accumulate over time through continuous efforts. In such circumstances, I may not have achieved massive success in the conventional sense, but overall, my career has been quite smooth.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

I’m not a particularly interesting person, and I don’t usually go out much. However, if my friends come to visit, Getty and Griffith Observatory are places I would definitely take them to. Part of the reason might be that these two places are so well-known, and I don’t have to think too hard about where to go.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The ones I am most grateful for are my parents. Despite their limited understanding of the industry I work in, they have provided me with unwavering support and assistance. Even during moments of self-doubt, they steadfastly believe that I can achieve what I aspire to.
