Meet Haoqian (eric) He | Freelance Filmmaker & Production Sound Mixer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Haoqian (eric) He and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Haoqian (Eric), what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
The most important lesson my career has taught me is the value of adaptability. In the film industry, especially as a Production Sound Mixer, no two projects are ever the same. Each set comes with its own unique challenges—unpredictable environments, last-minute changes, technical issues, and creative adjustments. I’ve learned that being flexible and staying calm under pressure is just as important as technical expertise. Another key lesson is the power of collaboration. As a filmmaker, working closely with directors, producers, and other crew members is essential to bringing a project to life. Good communication and teamwork not only make the workflow smoother but also create a better final product.

What should our readers know about your business?
As a Production Sound Mixer, my goal has always been to approach every project with professionalism, attention to detail, and a deep respect for the storytelling process. Sound is such a crucial part of filmmaking, and I take pride in ensuring that every production I work on has clean, high-quality audio that enhances the audience’s experience.
Before I even graduated from college, I started laying the groundwork for my personal studio, Eric Sound Studio. I wanted to create more than just a business—I wanted to build a brand that filmmakers could trust, knowing that their projects would receive the highest level of care. I provide detailed equipment lists, sound logs, and ongoing post-production support. If the post team has any questions regarding production sound, I make sure to be available to help.
What makes Eric Sound Studio unique is that it’s not just a service—it’s a personal and collaborative experience. I didn’t want to create a distant, impersonal brand. That’s why, instead of launching a separate Instagram account for my work, I chose to keep everything under my personal profile. I want my collaborators and clients to see not just the work I do but also who I am—a dedicated professional who truly cares about the art of sound and the people I work with.
At the end of the day, my brand is built on passion, precision, and a personal touch. I strive to make every production I’m part of a smooth and enjoyable experience, where sound isn’t just a technical necessity but an integral part of storytelling.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend were visiting Los Angeles for a week, I’d definitely plan an itinerary that highlights the city’s incredible film history and its connection to the entertainment industry.
We’d start with a visit to California State University, Northridge (CSUN), the school I graduated from. The university’s library was even used as a filming location for Star Trek, and it’s a great spot to explore while getting a feel for the campus atmosphere.
Next, we’d head to Griffith Observatory, one of the most famous landmarks in LA, with stunning views of the city. Not only is it a must-see for anyone visiting, but it’s also a legendary filming location, featured in movies like The Terminator and La La Land.
Another stop would be Santa Monica Pier, where we could walk along the beach, grab some seafood, and visit the spot where Forrest Gump was filmed. The pier has that classic California vibe and is a perfect place to catch the sunset.
Of course, we’d also visit Angels Flight, the historic funicular in downtown LA, best known for its romantic moment in La La Land. It’s a small but iconic piece of LA’s cinematic charm.
For a more behind-the-scenes look at the industry, I love driving around North Hollywood, Studio City, and Burbank. These areas are filled with production studios, sound stages, and post-production houses—sometimes, you can even spot active film sets. One of my favorite stops is Filmtools in Burbank, a specialty store for filmmaking gear. I could easily spend hours there, chatting with the staff about the latest equipment and industry trends.
For me, LA is a city that never stops inspiring, and there’s always something new to discover, especially for film lovers!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d love to dedicate my shoutout to my school: California State University, Northridge (CSUN). When I first started my journey, I was simply passionate about filmmaking, but I hadn’t yet discovered my specific path. It was during my time at CSUN that I found my love for production sound and realized that being a Production Sound Mixer was what I truly wanted to do. The education and hands-on experience I gained there gave me the foundation I needed to work in the film industry in Los Angeles.
Beyond academics, CSUN was also a huge part of my personal growth. As an international student from China back then, CSUN was my first home away from my hometown — a place where I adapted to a new culture, built meaningful friendships, and explored the beauty of Los Angeles. Over time, I not only fell in love with my craft but also with this incredible city.
So, I’m incredibly grateful to CSUN—not just for shaping my career, but for shaping me as a person. It will always hold a special place in my heart.
