We had the good fortune of connecting with Harley Gusman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Harley, how do you think about risk?
I’d like to say that my whole life has been based around taking risks, or maybe I’m just a risky person. That sounds terrible! But I don’t ever second guess my risks, I always take them on with excitement. For the most part- I believe that’s what has gotten me “far” in life…  High risk, high reward!

What should our readers know about your business?
I officially launched Dewyer in January of 2019. My initial goal was to create a line of skincare products that pushed the eduction and the importance of oils. All of this sparked from an early passion for facial care, as I had acne growing up! I was able to heal my acne-prone skin with nourishment and hydration rather than dry it out with every dermatologist recommended concoction. When Dewyer launched, we quickly saw incredible feedback, and astonishing skin transformations. I think I was most proud when Urban Outfitters picked up the products to sell in retail… It’s still pretty damn exciting to see my wash stocked on their shelves.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh man, if my best friend were visiting the area I would take her to my favorite bagel spot in the morning, Courage Bagels. The line would probably be an hour long, so we’d drive to Echo Park right after, burn off the bagel walking one of my favorite trails. I would definitely try to make it to the flea market (PCC), and somehow end up in Malibu! After watching the sunset on the beach, I’d probably go to Messhall for dinner, that place just does everything right. Drinks would be at Oyster Bar. I’d say that’s a pretty solid day. If she were staying for a week long trip, then we would be driving to Big Sur to set up my tent.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents! My mom has always been a play-by-the rules kind of person, and I am the opposite of that! I think, had she not given me the side eye any time I initially proposed an idea, like- starting my own business, I would have jumped in without attempting to read the preface. So, without her, I might have bit off more than I could chew! My dad has always been the biggest supporter of his children, no matter what their venture. He was so excited at the idea of Dewyer, that he wanted a position as employee right off the bat. He never hesitated to help me with the labor of it all, and there was a LOT of that in the beginning. I was making all of my shipments from home, and my dad was right by my side. The support I got from them was conducive to my current success, for sure.
