We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Kathryn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heather, why did you pursue a creative career?
Growing up I knew that I could be anything I wanted to be in life as long as I had a passion for it. I spent a lot of my early years in dance class, art class and church choir. When I was four-years-old I had my first performance in the “Three Piggy Opera” and I knew from then on I wanted to be on stage.
I never fit in as a kid but I knew whenever I stepped foot on a stage that my voice would be heard and I would be seen. Music was the only thing that was ever there for me consistently. If I had a good day or a bad day I knew music would be by my side.
In life, it’s hard to find a place where you can fully and unapologetically be yourself, for me that place was music. I think that’s why I care so deeply about my music and the songs I write because with it I want everyone to know that they are never truly alone.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I just recently released my very first single ‘do you know?’ on January 30th 2021. I wrote this song after I was asked “what do you regret most in life?” to which I responded “not having a relationship with my father” I was then told to write a song about it. As a child you’re supposed to look up to your father as your protector and hero but my father was the exact opposite. Releasing ‘do you know? was a way for me to move on from the pain of my past.
I think that being an artist is probably one of the hardest career paths anyone can choose. There are so many obstacles and challenges you will face but it’s important to not give up after a bad day, week or month. I’ve learned that having a bad day is completely normal, that you really can’t trust people and that if you want to make it you have to believe in yourself more than anything. 100% faith, 0% doubt.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Okay so assuming my best friend flew into LAX the first thing we would do is go to brunch on the beach at ‘The Strand House’ in Manhattan Beach which is about a 15 minute drive from the airport. The Strand House has an incredible view since it’s right on the beach and amazing food. After brunch we would probably go to the beach and/or shopping in Manhattan Beach.
While here I would take them to the Melrose Shopping District, The Griffith Observatory and of course Hollywood. We could spend the day thrift shopping, hiking up to the Hollywood sign, taking pictures with the stars on the walk of fame and looking up at the stars in the evening. I’d definitely make us get dressed up to go to Beverly Hills.
As for food places I would take them to ‘Blue Plate Taco’ in Santa Monica as well as ‘The Best Damn Breakfast Burrito’ which does in fact have the best breakfast burritos. But make sure you get it with a side of fries because they’re incredible. We could also go to Nine&Nine which is the best Thai food I’ve ever had in Pasadena.
There’s really so many different places to explore out here in Los Angeles and I would just want to take them to as many places as I could in the few days they’d be here!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout would have to go to my mom. She has always been my biggest supporter in my life and has never once told me not to follow my dreams. My mother raised me to be the best version of myself and words cannot describe how thankful I am to have her as my mom. She’s been with me through it all, the good performances and the bad ones. The endless hours of me singing at the top of my lungs at 9pm trying to nail the high note in a Kelly Clarkson song to the hours she spent driving me to vocal lessons and performances every week. I love my mom so much and I just want to make her proud!

I had the pleasure of meeting Heather Katheryn when she attended school in Phoenix, AZ. I feel that we entered each other’s lives at a time when Heather was finding herself in her music. Little did she know, she entered my life during that time as a reminder to me that in all my 41 years, music has ALWAYS been my rock. It took spending time with Heather and hearing her talk about and sing about all things ever for me to see and return to what she loves the most and lives about. Thank you Heather for reminding me of who I really am. You led me home and I am forever in your debt. Love you woman!
