We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Ross and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Heather, what inspires you?
I’ve always been drawn to the in-between spaces where dreams blur into waking life, where reality feels just a little off, where the subconscious peeks through. I love the idea that there’s more to existence than what we can see. Maybe there are infinite versions of reality running alongside us, or maybe our dreams are glimpses into something bigger. Through my art, I try to capture that sense of mystery—of stepping into another world, even if just for a moment. The strange and the sublime often coexist, and there is poetry in the quiet and chaotic corners of uncertainty and the unknown.
My work explores these liminal moments, pulling inspiration from alternate realities, parallel universes, and the unknown. Using photography and mixed media I play with texture, light, and abstraction to create pieces that feel familiar yet otherworldly. It’s all about that eerie, beautiful feeling of déjà vu—like you’ve been somewhere before but can’t quite place it. Ultimately, I want my work to spark curiosity, inviting people to question what’s real, what’s possible, and what might be waiting just beyond the edge of perception.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a photography-based, mixed media artist working with photomontages, mixed media collages, and altered books. After earning my BFA, I moved to Taos, New Mexico, where I immersed myself in the art community—working in galleries, coordinating exhibitions, and joining Greg Moon Art Gallery, which still represents me today.
When I moved to California during the pandemic, everything felt uncertain—especially when it came to the arts. But settling in Long Beach pushed me to explore a different side of my work. I started creating what I call my “vulgar, granny chic” collection—snarky greeting cards, photo transfers on vintage plates, and handmade jewelry that mixes most of which contrasts foul language with vintage, floral accents. Through it all, I’ve learned that staying creative means staying flexible, experimenting, and knowing when to pause and recharge.
More recently, I’ve been organizing art pop-ups in Long Beach to give other artists a platform to sell, connect, and gain visibility. These events also feature local musicians and DJs, creating a space where different creative communities intersect. It’s been incredible to build something that not only expands my own network but also helps uplift other artists. Follow @badgoodartclub to see what we’re working on next.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I really love living in Long Beach and always jump at the chance to show it off. I would take them to Good Bar for Taco Tuesday, a show or the Mad World dance party at Alex’s and see what’s happening at Supply and Demand. After exploring the Long Beach Museum of Art we’d have brunch at Claire’s, and then some shopping at Hobo Jane’s on Retro Row. Grabbing a beer and sitting on the patio at Ballast Point Brewing is another favorite of mine. I would also make sure we take a bike ride along the Shoreline Bike Path, and if the AquaLink is running that is an absolute must!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Local Long Beach artist David Clark has been a game changer for me. He builds mini galleries for others around town, starting with 2 in his own neighborhood that he curates. He’s a truly unique, caring individual who gives many other artists of all types a lending hand. Through him and his amazing wife Carol, I’ve befriended so many amazing artists, and he always encourages me to keep creating.
