We had the good fortune of connecting with Henry L. Benton III and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Henry L., let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I am inspired by the greatness that surrounds me. My friends, peers and mentors are accomplishing so many of the goals they set for themselves, are helping change the narrative and adding positive representation for the Black community. Their work ethic , passion and purpose fuels me to do the same.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am currently earning my PhD in Counseling Psychologist at Tennessee State University, with the goal of becoming a Sport Psychologist. I am also an author of two children’s picture books titled “Yes Dad” and “H is for HBCU’s”. Being in a PhD program while also writing books keeps me busy but my it gives the younger generation proof that their dreams are possible and within reach, which keeps me pushing through. One of the biggest lessons I learned along the way is the importance of self care. In order to become the best version of myself, I have to make taking are of myself mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically a priority to avoid burnout. I am my brand, I am passionate about my purpose and that is what people buy more so than my product. My product is an extension my myself.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’ve been in Nashville for almost 8 years now so I have some great spots to take friends to when they come to visit. The two food spots that are a must are Sliver Sands and Prince’s Hot Chicken, both Black owned. Silver Sands is a soul food spot that has some of the best soul food in the country and Prince’s is a chicken spot with its chicken marinated in various heated flavors. I would also take them to the African American Music Museum on Broadway. Broadway is another popular spot that is a strip with many bars and restaurants. There are some lounge type of places too that are enjoyable to be at. There are parks, trails, water parks, arcades, go kart places, etc. that would make for a great week in Nashville.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my support system, so many to name but they know who they are. I am not here with out the love, encouragement and guidance from all of them.
