We had the good fortune of connecting with Hershel Abram and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hershel, why did you pursue a creative career?
I felt a career in music was the best way for me to honor my brothers memory. He was the beautiful soul who motivated me to play the drums in addition to continuing with the piano.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a professional darbuka player and member of the international music group Vassal States who has played with various top 40 artists, produced music for NBC/Universal television shows and co-host The Real Deal on ESPN AM1700 among other stations.
My passion to create a unique musical sound and experience, discipline and my energetic stage presence collectively helps me to stay booked 52 weekends of the year.
I believe that whats great is never easy and what is easy never lasts. I had to get comfortable with rejection, recognizing opportunists that want to use your musical gifts to line their pockets, find peace with knowing that my musical gifts will make room for me if I focus on my craft instead of competing, finding my sound instead of trying to imitate other creative souls and to continuously be a student of excellence every time I perform or create.
We are excited to announce that Vassal States is touring Europe this summer to promote our new series of singles that will start to be released in September/October 2023. Following the first release, we will be releasing a new record every month on all major platforms. If you love house music and want to learn more about our electric musical experience, join our mailing list on www.vassalstatesmusic.com.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First, we would start with healthy freshly squeezed juice from Kreation on the West side and then go on a nature hike at Murphy Ranch Train in Pacific Palisades.
Next, we would change it up and cruise pch in my classic 1963 Lincoln Continental Convertible through Malibu, Santa Monica and stop off at The Rose Venice which is a boho-chic eatery. For some live music, we would go to Bar Lis a new rooftop lounge that brings the sophistication of the Cote D’Azur to the heart of Hollywood. I may stop by Death & Co which has a speakeasy vibe for some creative drinks.
Next I would have brunch at The Rooftop by JG and then hit Rodeo for shopping spree. Later in the day I would stop at Eataly for pasta, cheese and wine.
Other food places off the beaten path that are delicious delicious are Taisho for Japanese, Casa Vaga for mexican food and TLV Tapas Bar
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The late Leslie Jon Thomas inspired me to live a life of freedom through music.
