We had the good fortune of connecting with Adriana Tesler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Adriana, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I grew up in a family of small business entrepreneurs. My parents owned restaurants and I saw how passionate they were about their business, from the quality of the products to the customers’ experience. I was a single mom right out of high school, and this pushed me to hustle every day, to make ends meet and provide for my children. Through hard work and perseverance, I achieved a successful career in the beauty industry, as a hair and make-up artist for many years. Then I came to a realization that the timing was right for me to open my own salon, and provide a safe and supportive space for other artists to grow. My path went full circle, as I drew from my parent’s work ethics and my own passion, to create my salon. It was scary and very challenging at first, but my goal was to provide the highest quality hair and make-up services in Silver Lake, and the East side of Los Angeles, to the level that you would before only find in Beverly Hills.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Tesler Salon is a world-class hair salon that provides some of the highest quality hair and make-up services in the Los Angeles area, in a beautiful and relaxed Cali-cool Silver Lake setting.

We faced a lot of challenges from the get-go, as we opened one month before the pandemic hit. We had to close for months at a time, and weren’t open enough to get attention or traction, nor get any government help. It was very challenging to just get our name out there without being open, but also with staffing. Our industry shifted during the pandemic, as stylists were doing more house calls, or working from home, and still do today. That in itself made it hard to find the right team.

We invested so much into our business, and not knowing if we could stay open, and survive, was extremely stressful. We pushed on through with a resilient mindset, and being creative in all facets of our industry to keep the doors open.

I hope my story is inspiring to others in my industry, or anyone who is struggling. It is a story of resilience and perseverance. I’ve overcome many challenges throughout my life and career, whether being a single mom and hustling to provide for my kids, or trying to keep my son alive as he was going through cancer in his teens.

Even with my salon, I’ve worked tirelessly to keep the doors open during an unprecedented pandemic. I’ve had to find ways to keep hope alive, with a lot of faith in my heart, a strong support system, from friends, family, and faithful clients alike, without compromising my personal and work ethics, and ensuring my clients all receive world-class services, and feel good about themselves when they leave our doors.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love LA! It is eclectic, full of surprises, and there are always new and exciting things happening. If a friend from out of town came to visit, I would take them to Silver Lake for a chill and delicious breakfast, at Sqirl for example, then we could go to Downtown’s Arts District for an exhibit at the Hauser and Wirth gallery and end up at Grand Central Market, or Bottega Louie for a cool lunch. We could then go to the Griffith Observatory for a stellar view of LA and have dinner at Café Stella for some hip people-watching!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a big shoutout to my husband, who has always supported me in all my endeavors, whether in my career or in starting my own business. I have also been so lucky to have my close friend, Laura Glover who, as a successful business owner, has been such a source of inspiration, an amazing friend, and a guiding light through all the challenges that creating your own business presents.
