We had the good fortune of connecting with Ignacio ( aka: Cacho) Suarez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ignacio ( aka: Cacho), how do you think about risk?
I believe that without risks there is no way to succeed, risks push you outside of your comfort zone, they make you feel nervous and excited at the same time. Risks are part of the unknown and I don’t think there is a better way to learn and to grow than in those moments in life.

Taking risks has been a crucial point in my life, from leaving my country to a new one, learning a new craft, starting a business where no one knew me and competing in a town surrounded by the best of the best. I’ve dived into risks to become the best version of myself, and I know I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What I do is fine line or single needle tattoos. It is a craft that was very interesting to me since the beginning because of the intricate way you need to work on the skin.
The needle and the speed should be in perfect synchronization, because with one needle doing the work, if you do it too slow the needle will not drop any ink into the skin, and if you do it too fast, the needle will become a blade and it will only cut the skin, so finding that sweet spot right in between is what took me some time to find and now that I got it I love the results I’ve been getting with it.

I like to be known for my fine line work, being able to create tattoos that have very intricate details but most of all I want to be known as an artist who truly cares about his clients. I love connecting with my clients and creating the best art piece I can possibly do for each of them.

What am I most proud of?
My hard work. I don’t take anything for granted, I started this path with nothing; borrowing a machine for the first year of my career, with no clients, in a foreign country, with no “connections’ in the industry that could do favors for me. I had nothing and I worked my self up to where I am, and I’m very proud of that, I’m the living proof of what hard work, commitment and focus can bring into your life.

What sets me apart from others?
I think we all are different, I like to see my self as an individual, I don’t like to compete or compare myself to others, I like to think the sun shines on everyone of us and that there is plenty of room for all of us.
I focus on my self, every day I wake up and I want to be better than what I was the day before, my biggest competition is myself. So that’s how I rule my life, and I think so far people can appreciate it and they come to me because of that. Good energy, hard work, passion and smiles.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely start my day in Manhattan beach, take the morning sun with a bagel for breakfast, eating it at the beach, while watching the ocean is definitely a must for me.

For afternoon walks I love the art scene, creative atmosphere and local stores you can find around arts district, little Tokyo or silver lake in downtown L.A.
looking for murals, having a blue bottle iced oat-milk latte and seeing all the local stores is some of my favorite things to do to gather inspiration.

And to finish a good day, I would go to have dinner in Venice or Santa Monica, where some of my favorite restaurants are,
And if you are lucky to be there on the first Friday of every month, in Venice you will find the entire street of Abbot Kinney closed full of food trucks where you can literally find anything you could think of.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Erick Gutierrez. My mentor who opened the doors of his shop for me and was willing to teach me the craft of tattooing.
He showed me what tattooing is not only from a business or money perspective, he showed me that tattoos are the most meaningful form of art that you can do to connect with someone, someone who is willing to trust you with their skin for life.
Tattoos help heal wounds or celebrate special and happy memories, tattoos are marks that tell a story and that help people carry special moments of their lives with them, and the one creating this eternal connection is the tattoo artist.
