We had the good fortune of connecting with Ima Carnelus and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ima, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I gave birth to my son prematurely at 22 1/2 weeks pregnant and I had to shift in ways that I wasn’t expecting but knew was necessary for not only his health and well being- but for our new Family dynamic as well. My life was forever changed as I watched my son fight through the NICU. We were seeing miracles take place right before our eyes and it inspired me. I wanted a way to express myself creatively while also honoring all of the little miracles around the world. At the time there weren’t many apparel companies creating inspirational pieces that truly spoke to me, so I decided to create it! Thus Halos & Miracles was born. My goal was to create something that would empower others families to make a statement and show the world that miracles do exist!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Halos & Miracles is an inspirational apparel brand. Each item is designed to make a statement of hope, encouragement, and even a sense of pride. Becoming a preemie Mom truly inspired my brand. I wanted to wear shirts that accurately expressed just how proud I was to be a Mom to miracle. A baby who was given a 20% chance of survival and beat the odds. Our journey was far from easy, but I decided to fully embrace it and create something that would empower other Parents. I also wanted my son to wear positive affirmations that reflected who were going through or had We don’t only create clothing for preemies, we have a wide variety of onesies, tees, sweaters and accessories for all! With each new item that is released, our Customers fall more in love with the brand. Some purchase items in faith for their unborn child- its a tangible way for them to hold onto hope that one day they indeed will have a child to fill that tiny cute onesie that says, “answered prayer” or ” little miracle”. Our brand stands out from others because we are committed to remaining authentic, providing fresh designs and we are a Black Woman owned Business that strives to show that representation matters.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am from LA and absolutely love the City. If I had friends visiting from out of State our itinerary would include a few of my favorite spots. Manhattan Beach to get your feet wet and feel the peaceful ocean breeze. The Grove for some fresh air, shopping and maybe a Celebrity sighting! When it comes to food there are so many delicious options. The Boiling Crab for a good seafood feast, The Plum tree Inn or Yang Chow in DTLA. No only are those options great for dining, when in DTLA one can get a true feel for the City. There truly is so much to do and see. Oh, and you can’t come to Los Angeles and not stop at Roscoe’s for a #9. Taking a trip to the Westside for some delicious treats at Diddy Riese is an absolute must, there may be a long line BUT it will definitely be worth the wait. And we can’t forget about taking time out for some R&R at Glen Ivy Resort & Spa!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this shout out to my Family. Their love and support has pushed me to be the Woman I am today. Whenever I have feel like giving up, I think about my why. I think about the legacy I am building and what that will mean for my Children.. There is a lot of hard work involved with operating my small business, but knowing that I am making a difference and being a great example to my little ones fuels me.
