We had the good fortune of connecting with Irene Stylianou and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Irene, is there something you believe many others might not?
I generally dislike advice, particularly when I distrust someone’s motives. I especially disagree with the super cliché ‘Everything happens for a reason’. I’ve always tried to make things happen, I don’t like sitting around waiting for things to happen to me.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Well, I somehow found a way to combine art with business; my small business, my camera shop. I opened my shop back in 2011 and I know part of its success lies both in my personal knowledge of the subject of photography and the fact that I’ve always been artistically inclined. Being a photographer in Cyprus can be challenging, especially when everyone’s reaction to you shooting film is “film? I thought they didn’t make that anymore”. But, I trust my initial business idea, my product, my services and my clientele.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, every time I have people visiting, I make sure to take them out to my favorite place in Larnaca; The Tudor Inn Bar. A drive around the neighboring villages is also a must, Cyprus combines sea views and mountain views, all within a few miles distance. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A special shoutout to the global analogue community and my colleagues at Lomography HQ. And of course, to everyone who’s recognized and appreciated my love and passion for what I do. When your customers become your friends, it probably means you’re doing something right!
