We had the good fortune of connecting with Itzel Lovato and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Itzel, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
At first, I didn’t think much of it. It was an opportunity that fell into my lap but when I got the opportunity to become an influencer and content creator, I definitely ran with it. This is something I never knew I wanted but felt so grateful for the opportunity to come knocking on my door. I had to hustle and it was going to be a lot of work but I’m so glad that I took the opportunity and continued my journey.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It makes me so excited to be part of this industry right now. As a plus size creator and model, we are seeing CHANGE happen right before our eyes. 10 years ago, maybe even 5 years ago, there weren’t many plus size creators or models. Now, there are SO many creators who are teaching people how to love their bodies and teaching acceptance, and spreading body positivity. I am so proud to be part of this journey. I say everyday that if I can inspire just ONE person a day, I am doing my job right so when I get a DM from someone saying that they wore a crop top for the first time because I inspired them to or that they’re buying more color in their wardrobe instead of “slimming” black, I quite literally jump for joy. That’s what this journey is about. It’s about making sure people don’t feel the way I did when I was growing up and they love and accept their body for what it is: their body. There have been obstacles and challenges in my way. Sometimes social media can be overwhelming. Sometimes you feel like you aren’t growing but you always have to remember it’s NOT about the numbers. In the beginning, I thought it was. I thought I needed to have 10k then 50k then 100k to be successful. But that’s not the case. It’s about the community that I’ve grown to love and cherish. I always look to my community when I feel like it’s getting to be too much and remember that it’s because of them that I am in the position I am. It’s because of them that I am here. It’s because of them that I do what I do. Then, everything else fades. I do everything for my community I’ve built and couldn’t be more grateful for this journey together.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Our first stop is always Porto’s. I need to get my fruit tarte, ASAP! Then, we’d probably hit the beach and walk the pier in Santa Monica.
Sometime during this trip, we will probably end up at The Fonda or Staples Center for a concert.
Bossa Nova for Lunch.
Definitely THRIFT! Maybe catch the rose bowl flea market. And find new places to eat and drink while we drive around town.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My boyfriend, Manny, deserves so much credit for where I’ve gotten. Not only does he help me take pictures but he motivates me. There has been so many times that I wanted to quit because it was getting to be too much or because I felt underpaid but he always encouraged me to keep going. If it wasn’t for him talking me into working with a brand, I might have never gotten my first in store campaign. I always look to him for input in everything I do and I don’t think I’d be where I am today if it wasn’t for his help.
