Meet Ivaylo Angelov | Abstract Painter

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ivaylo Angelov and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ivaylo, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Honestly, it feels like the artistic career pursued me, if anything. Looking back, I wasn’t given much of a choice in the matter. I had no other “practical” skills, and I still don’t.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been making art all of my life, in one form or another. When I came to Southern California I quickly realized that making a living with fine art alone would be quite the hill to climb. Especially when combined with the other, regular challenges of the immigrant life. So I shifted my focus and went into the commercial arts. I’ve been working in the LA animation industry in one capacity or another for about 20 years now.
My personal art, though more important and meaningful, is my “night time job.”

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to a concert at Frank Gehry’s Disney Hall, then to the Broad museum right next door. We’d go on a leisurely Art walk to check out DTLA’s contemporary galleries. We would obviously eat at Bianca in Culver City(their affogato is the best in the state).

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My support list is too long, but I have to mention my family, my mentors, and the art community I’m surrounded with. They really are the best people to be around.
