Meet J Maceo | Singer/Songwriter

We had the good fortune of connecting with J Maceo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi J, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Choosing to be happy makes me happy. I’ve definitely had times of unhappiness while possessing the thing that I thought I needed in order to be happy
I actively choose to feel good. Two good practices for that are making a gratitude list and playing this game where I start naming all the things I like and see how long I can go
I’m not saying that I don’t have very difficult times. But learning that lesson helps the great times to be even better and the difficult times less difficult, even if but a fraction
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a singer/songwriter. I was told by a few people prominent in my life that I wasn’t a good singer… That thought couldn’t settle in too deeply, because I couldn’t NOT write and sing songs.
I did karaoke and open mics to get comfortable singing in public. Doing those things put me in the path of other creative people who encouraged me and gave me chances
One of the greatest lessons I learned that continues to improve my life is to say yes to things that scare me. Someone once asked me to play a show, and I had only performed in a show once in front of people. I was thinking of ways to tell him that I wasn’t ready when I gave in and said yes
That was a turning point for me in music and in life. The majority of my success in music comes from that one decision
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’d take them through the canyons and find a spot overlooking the entire city. Los Angeles seems so quiet and still from that vantage point
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The first person I thought of is my friend, Ethan who knows how to reach me on a level no one else can. That helps me see my assets and liabilities, so I can grow into the best version of myself
But the best answer is that life/the universe, whatever you want to call it is conspiring on my behalf. Things happen FOR me now rather than TO me.
I listen to a lot of Abraham Hicks and Dr. Joe Dispenza to stay reminded of those things
