We had the good fortune of connecting with J.R. Heckman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi J.R., what role has risk played in your life or career?
Embracing risk has long been a guiding principle in my life. To be successful in the entertainment industry I believe it’s crucial to seize every experience and opportunity that comes your way. It is so important to be authentic and real with people. Many of the projects that I am involved in currently stem from my willingness to embrace opportunity. You never know who you might meet by taking a risk and making a connection. A complete stranger could become a collaborator and potentially play a pivotal role in your career and personal growth. My advice is to actively pursue any and all opportunities; immerse yourself in the industry while being purposeful and passionate. I firmly believe in the notion that everything happens for a reason, and I’m incredibly fortunate to have a supportive network that guides me towards my aspirations. My ultimate goal is to do a music tour and transition seamlessly between Broadway in New York and Film/TV in LA. I find all facets of the entertainment industry fascinating, particularly in today’s landscape, where versatility is paramount for success. While my core strengths lie in my vocal performance and acting, my entrepreneurial drive has proven to be a valuable asset, and has significantly contributed to my career trajectory. Beyond my artistic abilities, I possess skills in producing and writing, which are increasingly essential in today’s multifaceted entertainment realm. I am driven by the lifelong dream of achieving EGOT status, and I am fully committed to making that dream a reality.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My voice and music are of a classical pop style akin to artists such as Josh Groban, Michael Bublé and Frank Sinatra. My creative journey began in second grade when I started singing publicly; followed by acting in fifth grade. It was during this time that music defined my life story. In high school, I achieved recognition as a finalist and three-time nominee for Best Actor in the country at the Jimmy Awards/National High School Musical Theatre Awards. Subsequently, I attended NYU Tisch School of the Arts, where I graduated in 2 1/2 years with a BFA in Musical Theatre/Screen Acting and a minor in Producing. During my time at NYU, I produced two concerts for Josh Groban’s Find Your Light Foundation, raising thousands of dollars for underserved music programs nationwide. I also became a member of Actors Equity and SAG-AFTRA, made my solo debut at The Green Room 42, and I am scheduled to do my debut show at 54 Below in August. Furthermore, I have served as the Directing Assistant for the Jimmy Awards for the past three years in addition to working for the Nederlander Producing Organization on Broadway. Additionally, I am currently assisting with the Broadway production of “An Enemy Of The People,” starring Jeremy Strong and Michael Imperioli. In addition, I am in the process of joining the Recording Academy and set to release an EP this year. The journey of an artist is often challenging, as the path is less common and frequently misunderstood by others. However, by remaining true to myself, focusing on my goals, and pursuing what I know I was born to do, I firmly believe that I can achieve my dreams and inspire others along the way.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite spots in New York City include dinner and a glass of Moscato at Eataly or The Smith; taking in a spectacular Broadway show; exploring the Seaport in the Financial District and shopping in SoHo. I love to take walks through Central Park or find a quiet spot to work in Washington Square. My go to indulgences are the exceptional iced lattes at 787 Coffee, and the delicious desserts at Angelina’s Bakery which I often enjoy as a post-audition treat.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I feel incredibly fortunate to have an amazing support system. First, I want to shoutout my wonderful parents who have always believed in me and are a steadfast source of support during challenging times. Additionally, I am forever grateful to my vocal coach who is like my second mom and therapist all in one. She has supported me through every audition and every performance for over a decade. I am also immensely grateful to Playhouse Square, for believing in me as their three time representative in the National High School Theatre Awards. No one can achieve success on their own. It truly takes a village and the love and support of the community of people surrounding you. I am very blessed to have amazing people in my corner, supporting me and lifting me up.
