We had the good fortune of connecting with jacinda pender and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi jacinda, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think taking *some* risks in your life and career is necessary, especially when you’re trying to acquire opportunities you find very daunting. I’ve taken several risks in my career, in fact, I took a huge risk last year moving to LA during the middle of a pandemic in order to pursue my aspirations and dreams. Some risks are worth it, other’s aren’t so much. It really comes down to if you’re willing to make that jump and take the initiative to do something risky that may or may not benefit your life and career. Either way, I think it’s important to do things you won’t regret later in life.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
So, I am a makeup artist and my work specifically focuses on avant-garde and editorial work. With my art, I try to convey a message with it. My work is very personal to me and like a therapeutic outlet for me. What I’m most proud of is being able to share my work with the world and hearing people telling me how much I inspire them – that is comforting as hell to hear as an artist. At a young age, I find myself in disbelief that I’m already making an impact in this world, a positive impact. I will say, being where I’m at today was not easy at all. I had to go through a lot of hardships to get to this stage in my life, though I’m not quite where I need to be yet, but patience is key, right? There were plenty of times where I wanted to give up my dream as a makeup artist because I didn’t think I would be successful at it; I was afraid of failure. But I am a HUGE believer in not allowing your environments and stressors in life get in the way of you pursuing your aspirations and goals. I believe in doing what makes you happy, regardless if you’re going to regret it in life. I want to look back on my life in the later years knowing I did what needed to be done in order to make myself happy.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a very nonchalant person, so we wouldn’t do anything too crazy. But I would probably just take them to the beach and we would have a nice beautiful picnic while watching the sunset. Then after that, later on we would go out to a nice Asian restaurant, I’m think Thai food and we would just indulge in the lovely array of foods.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout my mother who has really believed in me and my aspirations. She is one influential person I look up to, so shoutout to you mother for pushing me, encouraging me and believing in me to do whatever it is I need to do to reach a successful and healthy life and career.
