We had the good fortune of connecting with Jackie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jackie, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
The most important lesson my business has taught me is to get out of my comfort zone. And that nothing happens unless I act. Being creative and creating art is amazing but creating a career out of it definitely means getting out of comfort, speaking to people, learning about business, going out there and embodying and sharing your work. Ultimately, what I’ve learned and continue to learn is that self belief will get you so far, so we have to keep believing in ourselves and know that we are capable of amazing things, so we have to stop sleeping on our potential and get working!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to share a little bit about my work. My name is Jackie, and I am the creator of Magical Youniverse!
Magical Youniverse is a world that emphasizes the importance of self love, healing, creativity and radical self expression through the means of visual art.

The way that this whole project began was a very long time ago when I was very small kid in south central. I grew up as a very introverted kid and later on in life had experiences with mental health, like anxiety and depression, that inevitably pushed me deeper into my shell. It was a very dark time in my life, but something that always kept me going was art! Since mental health was not something really shared about in my family, my sketchbook was my safe space, a place where I could draw out how I felt. It became a visual diary to which i would initiate a love and passion for creating artwork with a message that could impact myself and others to keep going no matter what.

As time has progressed, I have evolved from my safe space in my sketchbook, and have been able to overcome multiple mental barriers in order to share my art with people out there! My sketchbook drawings have become larger in scale now that I began painting murals, and I also have been able to create merch and participated in art shows with my work, traveled to Guatemala and collaborated with other artists.

The creative journey hasn’t been easy, but nothing worth working towards is. That is how we grow! I’ve had to overcome anxiety and self doubt multiple times while on my journey and I do not want to hide that! I’ve learned that we don’t have to be perfect without fear or anxiety to start pursuing our passions. We can step out into them despite that. Fear is always going to be there but the more we step out despite it, the easier it becomes.

I want the world to know that Magical
Youniverse is an act of self love, and I would love for people to feel inspired, uplifted, excited, and cute and magical by being in the presence of it. I also would like the world to know that we all need each other’s dreams. So please, share with us what excites you.

And of course, this is only the beginning but I am grateful to be where I am in my creative career with Magical Youniverse and I am excited to see what’s to come!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If one of my best friends were visiting the area for a week long trip we would definitely visit some art museums like the Broad museum, and make sure to go into the infinity room design by Japanese artist Yayou Kusama, and get some cute pictures there, we’d also visit LACMA, and the Getty museum.

Me and my best friends also love nature, views, and good food, so I would take them to some nice city views around LA and for sure get some tacos and aguas frescas from avenue 26. On another day get some ramen from Rakkan, and Ofcourse we have to support our street vendors too so we would get some fruit with lemon and Tajin and some ‘diablito’ raspados. Can you tell I love food?

Then we would walk the food off on a walk, Griffith park, LA historic park, or other cute park around LA area.

We would finish the week long trip with a bonfire at Dockewiler beach with some acoustic guitar music and singing around the camp fire.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not have the privilege to pursue a creative career if it were not for the hard work of my parents and grandparents who paved a path for me with more opportunities. That’s why I’d love to dedicate this shout out to them. But I would also not be here in my journey with out the support of friends and family who have encouraged and supported my art and aspirations by showing up to my events, going out to vend with me, helping to carry my canvases but more than anything, affirmed my capability. Thank you <3
