We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacque Ryal and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jacque, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Freedom in my schedule. I use to work for others…went from one day job to another day job. Then 4 years ago I was let go and it was the biggest gift from the universe. I took the opportunity to make my own business so that I could focus more time on my music and building that business. I realized in the last 4 years having complete freedom in my schedule is what truly brings me happiness. Each day I can decide what my day will look like and it isn’t dictated by some company policy or boss. I mean don’t get me wrong, I of course have some days that I have to take a meeting I may not want to, but I can build my week and ensure I’m spending 60% of my time on what i love most.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m an artist based in New York City known for synth / electronic duo RYAL that creates electronic / synth tracks and also fun R&B dance bops. Our sound is like Little Dragon meets Portishead and we are greatly influenced by works by Bonobo, Thome York, Sbtrkt, Tame Impala and Damon Albarn. The music business is insane, totally confusing and lacks transparency. You have to love it to be in it and keep doing it. Put your ego to the side and do what is best for the songs and put your best foot forward in promoting your work. Watch others, learn from them and don’t be a jerk. Respond to fans and respond to peers. We all need each other and there is room for everyone at the table. Don’t let peoples crazy competitive streaks wear you down – just identify that is their tactic and you keep moving forward.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well….post pandemic it would be: – Cook an amazing breakfast with coffee / tea – Drive upstate and ride horses – Grab a vegan lunch in Woodstock and drink bubbly – Shop antiques – Go to a concert and do an edible – Have an amazing dinner with lots of red wine and scotch – Stay up late playing games and laughing
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to give a shout out to my sister, Kim. Not sure what I would do without her. She has never stopped believing in me, challenging me and of course picking on me to keep me grounded. I love her a lot and hope she knows how much I appreciate and need her.
