We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacquie Joy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jacquie, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
When you establishing yourself in a certain craft/business, the work/life balance is ‘out of whack’ and is pretty much all work and all hours of the day! And you say ‘yes’ to EVERYTHING! Now, after 5 years of establishing myself in film/TV/media composing and freelancing I am fortunate and can finally be able to say ‘no’ and be alot more selective with the projects that I work on. I am now looking at spending more fun times with my lovely family and friends. Its also time get back to some hobbies (and regular exercise) again – I purchased a sports car and now driving on track is one of those new hobbies. I feel i can enjoy my creative (and business) work much more and feel ‘refreshed’ when I look at having things back in balance – but this is often hard to achieve!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a composer we are required to write anything and everything, but I am now specialising more in crime/thriller/suspense/drama and horror genres as well as documentary and world music work. I work on mainly feature film projects now, TV production music and corporate music. I overcome challenges of having to write a variety of genres by listening to other composers soundtracks and watching/listening to Netflix. I am constantly upgrading my technical and software knowledge as well and read magazines (like ‘Computer Music’) and watch Youtube videos to keep up with the latest techniques and sounds etc. I am proud of where I have come to and it is certainly beyond my wildest expectations! This year I was recognised for my mixing/engineering work for an EDM song that I wrote (nominated by Hollywood Music in Media Awards) and my documentary music (for Falls Farm) also received Gold Communicator and Gold Vega awards, which I was so grateful for and excited about.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Favourite spots are ‘The Avalon’ theatre where the Hollywood Independent Awards were held this year. Also the historic ‘TLC Chinese Theatres’ on Hollywood Blvd are amazing and one of the films I worked on this year, ‘Portals’, held it’s premiere screening here earlier this year.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The filmmakers that have believed in me and trusted me with their projects over the last 5 years deserve to be credited in my story. Choosing a composer is a very personal process and it is super competitive. Also the other amazing composers that i have worked with and learn from are a super important part of my journey so far…
