Meet Jaim Brohier | Multidisciplinary Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaim Brohier and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jaim, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
My main motivation behind pursuing an artistic career would be the desire to express and create. Aside from that having the extreme life and schedule flexibility is a huge plus too. I also enjoy working for myself rather than someone else.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is extremely expressive and intuitive especially regarding painted works – I guess my style is authentic to me as its quite experimental and unplanned. I was very lucky as this career path as artist was also unplanned, it happened very organically when I decided to start sharing my work. Prior to that I was working intermittently as a set designer and production designer, across the music, film and fashion industry. This practice was put on hold in 2020 due to covid, when whole industry halted. And from that this new endeavour began.
Living in Melbourne, Australia we had the longest and strictest lockdown in the world, it was quite brutal however the abundance of time gave me the ability to develop and determine my style without distraction. I used these two years to build a platform as an artist, I was quite lucky and privileged to be given this opportunity and didn’t want squander it.
My main objective as an artist is to freely and accurately communicate my feelings and what I experience through my individual visual language, whether or not it is received in that same way is no concern to me though. I love hearing external interpretations of the work that stray from my own thought process.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Melbourne is such an amazing city, it offer so much great art, food and nightlife.
I would definitely recommend my friend staying in the inner north of Melbourne, their is such an amazing community residing here.
Hanging out in Collingwood, Brunswick, Northcote and the surrounding suburbs would definitely provide good times!
Must hit spots in Melbourne to eat and drink for me would be:
– Joe’s Shoe Store
– Roccos Bologna Discoteca
– Little Hop
– Sushi Ten
– Hope St Radio
Catching an exhibition opening at ‘At The Above’ I would also highly recommend, this space one of my favourite galleries in Melbourne at the moment.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out my family, firstly my parents for giving me the ability and freedom to pursue my dreams through their own hard work and life choices.
Next would be my sister Jess, much of what I do still is guided by lessons she had taught me as fellow creative.
Lastly, but certainly not least Shelbie Lloyd, you opened my eyes to this world – you shifted my state of mind from a graphic designer to an artist. Your work ethic and your vision rubbed off on me and for that I am forever indebted.
