Meet Jake Fabricius: Portrait & Event Photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jake Fabricius and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jake, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My career started after I moved to LA in 2011. Photography for me was just a hobby and it was my wife that encouraged me to pursue it for work. My thought process behind starting my own business was a lot like jumping in a fast flowing river and just being taken with the current. I didn’t really know what I was doing, business wise, so I took a deep dive into honing my skill and figuring out the rest as I came across job leads. Haven’t regretted my decision to make my hobby my job, it’s been a great experience.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
For most part, as a business, I work solo. I believe your attitude and personable demeanor go a long way in people wanting to work with you, even if you’re good at your job. Mutual respect is very important to me in business. Starting out was very hard because I was new to LA and had to build relationships. It’s important to be genuine with people, not just using them to get work. I see that when people treat me that way and it’s a turn off. When I work with clients, my main job is just getting them to be comfortable in front of the camera; being down to earth and playful (tastefully) helps a lot with that, so that’s what I do. My brand is very editorial, mixed with portraiture and a touch or journalistic style. I love to draw out the humanity of a person in my work because I believe that’s the most compelling and truest artistic form for what I do. It’s how I see the world and I want to communicate that in my work.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would have to say my wife Jacqueline is my biggest encouragement in my career; without her I may not have had this job. Some of my biggest influences in my work have been Annie Leibovitz (her work was and is an inspiration to my development as a photographer); also my friend Koury Angelo has been a huge influence in my approach to photography and I’ve learned a lot from him and what the work flow in the industry is like. I’m very thankful for all my friends, family and colleagues who have poured into my success.
