We had the good fortune of connecting with Jalawni Appling and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jalawni, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I have always dreamt of entrepreneurship, hoping to one day create my own business. During the beginning of the pandemic, when people began to fear instability in their careers, I came to a realization: we are on borrowed time. I needed to begin using my talents to manifest my dreams. I grew tired of constantly hindering myself from beginning a journey that would not only bring me happiness but also create generational wealth. I kept asking myself questions like “where would I even start?”, instead of just starting. Finally, I took a leap of faith, and now “FauxEver Loc’d” has grown into a truly amazing venture. In just the span of a year, I have experienced incredible growth, professionally and personally. Starting and operating my business has shown me that constantly staying motivated and investing in yourself requires discipline and trust. In order to do and be all that you’ve dreamed, you have to face your fears head on. There will be major ups and downs, but getting back up and pushing through those setbacks is what’s crucial to success. Replace the word “risk” with “leap of faith”. When you take steps towards building and improving your career and your life, you’re not taking risks; you’re taking a leap of faith.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a natural hair care stylist. I specialize in loc’s, faux loc’s and loc extensions. My goal is to bring beauty, knowledge, and proper hair care education on a style that has been deemed as messy or unprofessional. “Loc’s” are apart of my culture and showcases strength and discipline while also enhancing the beauty and confidence in each individual. FauxEver Loc’d has a goal to remind everyone of their beauty in the most natural and protective state. My business has taught me to have faith and trust in myself. Everyday is an opportunity for my business to grow and showcase its potential. Stay FauxEver Beautiful.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Los Angeles where a beautiful beach is literally down the street!
We would definitely have to check out these great eateries:
Hotville Chicken
Openaire
Poppy + Rose
Nick + stef’s steakhouse
The beaches are great but Los Angeles is rich in culture. I’m all about supporting black businesses, so making a stop In leimert park is a must.
Visit
Nappily Naturals
Hot and cool cafe
Hilltop cafe
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To my mother; Schala Guzman, Brother Jared Appling, boyfriend Prentice Deadrick Jr., and friends; Jaron Alexander, Belinda Louis, Justin Hartley, and Achante Childress, thank you. Thank you for not only your continuous support but for your love as well. From lending me their motivational advice to sitting in my chair for hours while I practice new hairstyles, your love and support will never go unnoticed. “FauxEver Loc’d” wouldn’t be what it is now without your push and support.
