We had the good fortune of connecting with Clara Mokri and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Clara, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
If it doesn’t make you happy, don’t do it.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a storyteller first and foremost. Photography and documentary cinematography are vastly different approaches to visual storytelling, and I love doing both. I’ve enjoyed the recent challenge of figuring out what medium works better for different stories

Right now, I’m most proud about being selected to The 30, the Photo World’s Top Emerging Talent List. I’m also proud that my first documentary film, Anchored Out, was nominated for an International Documentary Association award and will be screening at some exciting film festivals this year.

I’d like to think that I’ve always worked hard, but when you love what you do, the work comes easy. I’ve found that one of the biggest keys to continuously loving your career is knowing when to take steps back and make time for yourself. That’s something that I make sure I do every day.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in Santa Cruz and surf every day, so we’d have to do that. Northern California is one of the most beautiful places in the world, so we’d take the truck and go camping for the week. I can’t disclose my secret spots, but let’s just say that if you get out there yourself, you’re sure to find them.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Maybe this is cheesy and to be expected, but I would not be anywhere near where I am today without the support from my mom and dad. All of my dreams were my own, and they had my back at every turn.
